Cee Lo Green issues apology for rape comments and returns to Twitter

September 3, 2014 9:51

Singer says his remarks were 'idiotic' and 'untrue'

Cee Lo Green has apologised for controversial remarks he made about rape on Twitter earlier this week.

The singer deleted his account on the social networking site on September 2 after posting a series of tweets relating to a recent court case in which he pleaded no contest to supplying ecstasy to a woman.

Green escaped jail time last month after pleading no contest to drugs charges. The singer was accused of secretly slipping ecstasy into the drink of his dinner date at a sushi restaurant in July 2012, and was sentenced to three years of formal probation and ordered to complete 360 hours of community service.

An earlier rape charge relating to the same alleged incident was dropped due to insufficient evidence. Writing on Twitter, Green had remarked: "People who have really been raped REMEMBER!!!" and "If someone is passed out they're not even WITH you consciously! so WITH Implies consent."

Although Green removed his profile from Twitter after receiving criticism for his remarks, he has now reactivated his account and has issued an apology. "I truly and deeply apologize for the comments attributed to me on Twitter," he wrote. "Those comments were idiotic, untrue and not what I believe."

Earlier today, meanwhile, it was revealed that Green's reality TV show The Good Life has been cancelled. MTV reports that US cable network TBS decided not to renew the programme for a second season after it returned disappointing viewing figures for its first six-episode run.

Nile Rodgers and Chic perform Daft Punk's 'Get Lucky' for the first time – watch

June 10, 2014 9:26

Rodgers worked on 2013 hit with French duo and Pharrell Williams

Nile Rodgers performed 'Get Lucky', his collaboration with Daft Punk, for the first time at a live show in France over the weekend. See above to watch him and Chic play the song now.

Despite it being released in April 2013, Daft Punk have yet to play live in concert since their return and Rodgers has always refused to put 'Get Lucky' into Chic live sets, preferring instead to play the song over the PA as the band say goodbye at the end of shows.

However, during a performance at Montereau Fault-Yonne in France this changed, as you can see in the video. Rodgers has not yet commented on why he chose to start playing the song. Pharrell Williams, the other collaborator on the original song, also plays it in his live solo show.

Many other artists have covered 'Get Lucky' in the last 12 months, including Daughter, Peace, Mystery Jets, Fall Out Boy and Wilco. In February the Russian police performed the song as part of the Winter Olympics 2014 Opening Ceremony in Sochi.

Eight more Michael Jackson albums to follow 'Xscape'?

June 10, 2014 11:50

"We got more surprises coming," says producer Rodney Jerkins

As many as eight posthumous Michael Jackson albums could be released following the success of 'Xscape' earlier this year, reports suggest.

With Jackson renowned for recording a wealth of different songs for consideration on each of his studio albums, there is believed to be lots of material in the vaults and Rolling Stone reports that "eight more albums culled from outtakes and repackaged material could be released".

"We got more surprises coming," says producer Rodney Jerkins, who worked as a producer on 'Xscape' alongside Timbaland and Stargate. "I'm sure there are a few more great things out there," says Jerkins, "and, hopefully, we'll all have a chance to hear them."

'Xscape' became Jackson's 10th Official Albums Chart Number One album in the UK upon its release last month. However, the album failed to reach the top spot in America and was pipped to the post by The Black Keys and their album 'Turn Blue.'

Meanwhile, a Michael Jackson hologram appeared at the Billboard Music Awards last month (May 18) in Las Vegas. The hologram was 'wearing' a white and gold jacket and red trousers and performed the song 'Slave to the Rhythm'.

Lena Dunham performs interpretative dance as Sia sings 'Chandelier' on US TV – watch

June 10, 2014 8:48

'Girls' actress was special guest for 'Late Night with Seth Myers' performance

Lena Dunham joined Sia for a performance of the singer-songwriter's new single 'Chandelier' on US TV last night (June 9). See above to watch now.

The Girls writer and actress donned Sia's blonde bob wig and danced as she sang the song face down in a pillow on top of bunk beds. During the dance Dunham smashes into objects around the mocked up bedroom, throws toilet paper around before climbing into the bed with Sia as the performance ends.

The Late Night performance is based on the official 'Chandelier' video, which features 11 year old dancer Maddie Ziegler.

Sia recently claimed that she could have given 'Chandelier' to Beyonce or Rihanna but chose to keep it for herself. The former Zero 7 singer has enjoyed huge success in recent years as a songwriter for hire, penning hits for Beyoncé and Rihanna as well as Katy Perry, Britney Spears and Eminem. Most recently she contributed a number of songs to Kylie Minogue's new album 'Kiss Me Once.'

However, 'Chandelier' is the first track to be heard from Sia's forthcoming solo album '1000 Forms Of Fear', her first since 'We Are Born' in 2010.

Morrissey wishes England squad good luck ahead of World Cup

June 9, 2014 17:20

The former Smiths singer was staying in same hotel as team in Miami and spoke to Leighton Baines

Morrissey has wished the England team good luck at the World Cup finals in Brazil after bumping into the players in a Miami hotel last week.

England player Leighton Baines revealed the conversation he had with the singer after introducing himself in a hotel the squad were staying in while preparing for this year's tournament. The defender admitted that he was one of the few players who actually recognised Morrissey and approached him to say hello.

"I had a chat with him. I was a bit nervous about going to speak to him to be honest. I wasn't sure how it would be received," Baines told The Mirror. "I was one of the few in the squad who actually knew who he was, which was disappointing enough. I was the only one who went over."

Admitting that besides himself only coach Gary Neville knew who Morrissey was, Baines continued: "I knew he'd played the night before and that he had a couple of gigs coming up, so I mentioned those and he wished us good luck." England's World Cup campaign kicks off on Saturday (June 14) when they face Italy.

Meanwhile, Morrissey was recently forced to cancel a gig in Atlanta, Georgia through ill health as well as postpone a show at the Revel Casino Hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

The Beatle has pushed a number of gigs back to October as he continues to rest on 'doctor's orders'

Paul McCartney has postponed a number of US tour dates, as he continues to recover a virus which saw him hospitalised in Tokyo, Japan last month.

Writing on his official website, McCartney said: "I'm sorry but it’s going to be a few more weeks before we get rocking in America again. I’m feeling great but taking my docs' advice to take it easy for just a few more days. Look forward to seeing you all soon."

Channing Tatum says Gambit role will 'change the superhero movie'

June 9, 2014

Actor says X-Men character is "not your typical hero"

Channing Tatum has said that his rumoured role as X-Men character Gambit is likely to begin with a stand-alone title that he hopes will "change the superhero movie.

As previously reported, X-Men: Days of Future Past producer Lauren Shuler Donner strongly suggested that Tatum will appear in the role for future movies, saying "He's a rogue, he's a rascal, just like Remy LeBeau."

Speaking to MTV, Tatum elaborated on her comments, saying: "We've talked about it being a standalone, first and actually trying to change the 'hero, superhero movie.' Because Gambit is not your typical hero."

"He's a thief," he continues. "He walks on the grey. I’m hoping we can change it a little bit, and then ultimately feather into the other ones."

However, Tatum still did not confirm that he has signed on to star in any films, adding: "Obviously, there’s nothing written… there’s only conversations and dreams, really, right now."

Arctic Monkeys' Alex Turner says he's in 'no hurry' to write 'AM' follow-up

June 10, 2014 13:45

'There's lots of shit still to do on this album', he says

Alex Turner has revealed he's in "no hurry" to start writing the follow-up to Arctic Monkeys' 2013 album 'AM'.

Speaking after the band's two triumphant shows at London's Finsbury Park last month, Turner says in this week's NME, which is on newsstands from tomorrow (June 11) and available digitally, that he still has a "lot of shit still to do" with promoting and touring 'AM'.

"I've written a few things, but I'm not in a hurry," the frontman says. "We're going to keep going [with touring] until the summer and beyond that a little bit, maybe. I don't know. I wouldn't think it'll be too soon that we do the next one."

He then goes on to admit that part of the band's reluctance to rush back into the studio is their burgeoning success in the US. "It's been going really well in America and there's still lots of shit still to do on this album," he said. "I don't feel, for once, that we need to rush and get on to the next thing. It seems like a good place to leave it for a minute."

Arctic Monkeys will headline Reading and Leeds on August Bank Holiday weekend.

Blood Orange premiere 'You're Not Good Enough' video – watch

June 9, 2014 17:01

The track features on Dev Hynes' 2013 album 'Cupid Deluxe'

Blood Orange have premiered the video for 'You're Not Good Enough', from the 2013 album 'Cupid Deluxe'.

The dance-based video, which you can watch above, was directed by Gia Coppola, granddaughter of Francis Ford Coppola. Dev Hynes of Blood Orange recently soundtracked 30 minutes of her new film Palo Alto, starring James Franco and based on a collection of the actor's own short stories. The film features the track 'April's Bathroom Bummer', which you can listen to below.

Speaking about the video for 'You're Not Good Enough', Coppola commented: "I was very excited by the prospect of getting to do a music video for Dev. I'm obviously a huge fan of his, and we've been talking about trying to make a video together for a while now. Dev has great taste. I love discussing what interests us and bringing our ideas together. I've always been fascinated with choreography and live television, both of which felt perfect for 'You're Not Good Enough'."

Meanwhile, Hynes has said that he was a victim of racial profiling at Berlin airport, after he was held up by officers last month. The musician and producer tweeted that officers went through his electronic equipment asking for receipts of items he had purchased some time previously, and that his experience was "nothing new".

"Was just held in Berlin Airport even though I'm a valid EU citizen with a US visa," he wrote. "Everywhere I've ever been I am reminded that there are people out there holding a prejudice because of my skin colour, yes it was racial." He added: "They went through all of my electronics and wouldn't let me go because I didn't have receipts for things I bought a year ago."

Dev Hynes, formerly Lightspeed Champion, released 'Cupid Deluxe', his second album under the name Blood Orange, in November last year. The next single from the album, 'It Is What It Is', will be released on July 7.

The xx working on 'completely different' third album in Texas and Iceland

June 10, 2014 9:48

Producer Rodaidh McDonald discusses follow up to 'Coexist' while also offering Jai Paul update

The xx are working on their third album between Texas and Iceland with the release said to have a "completely different concept" to the band's first two records.

Producer Rodaidh McDonald, who has worked with the band before as well as with Bobby Womack, Adele, King Krule, Sampha and Vampire Weekend as manager of XL Records in-house studio, spoke to Dazed about his recent time spent with the band as they work on a follow up to 2012 album 'Coexist.'

"It's a completely different concept, says McDonald. "just trying everything, trying to find new ways of working, new sounds."

He continues: "We're doing it in Texas and Iceland, and maybe France. So that's kind of starting in the middle of July, I’ve already spent a bit of time with them in Texas. There are songs which have come out of our experiences in New York and Texas that would never have come out in London; the colours and the ideas and the moods on some of these songs are just not things you would write in London. It's about opening things up a bit more. They are a London band, but they're also a band that’s spent a lot of time in different countries. So we’re trying to push that further with the Iceland trip, which is happening in July."

McDonald also touches briefly on the enigmatic artist Jai Paul, with whom he has recently worked. Confirming that Paul is still working on his debut album, the producer says: "I did something with him last week, some vocal production on a new song. We finished it, whether he wants to put it out or not I don’t know. It’s just a very long process for him I guess, he’s been working on (his album) for years. One of the things that I sort of identified was that he might benefit from some help using vocals. But his music sounds so good, he doesn’t need any help, I think he’s perfect."

Jamie xx previously spoke about recording a new album in Texas. During the musician and producer's BBC 6 Music 6 Mix residency on May 2, he played a song by Texan country musician Mickey Newbury and explained to listeners that his band were recently in the singer's home state, working on new music.

More information about the third album from The xx can be found on the Instagram page of the band's record label Young Turks, who last month posted pictures from Marfa, Texas, with the caption "LP3 Recording" as well footage of Oliver Sim of the band recording handclaps for the record. On Facebook the band said they were working at the Marfa Recording Company studio.

Iggy Azalea on equalling The Beatles chart record: 'I'd rather be The Rolling Stones'

June 10, 2014 12:44

Rapper recently scored both the Number One and Number Two spots in the Billboard Hot 100

Iggy Azalea has responded to those who criticise her authenticity while also dismissing the way she recently matched a US chart record previously held by The Beatles.

The Australian artist has received repeated criticism of her Americanised rap voice in reviews but says that she does not feel the need to pay notice to her roots when making music.

"We get so caught up, especially in rap, with what's authentic, and I wish people would think more about what the fuck that even means," she told Billboard. "One critic was like, 'Why didn't you talk about more Australian things?' I don't understand why I'm supposed to write a song about living in the outback and riding a kangaroo to be authentic."

Elsewhere in the interview, Azalea says that the fact she recently matched The Beatles US chart record, scoring both the Number One and Number Two spots in the Billboard Hot 100, "doesn't mean anything". Distancing herself from the record, she said: "I'd rather be The Rolling Stones."

Iggy Azalea made news last week when she criticised Lorde's appearace at Nirvana's Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction, arguing that her appearance wasn't appropriate as she was not a peer of Kurt Cobain.

Parklife assault victim was protecting girlfriend from being hit with inflatable toy

June 10, 2014 12:05

A man is fighting for his life after being knocked unconscious at the Manchester bash

A man who is critically ill in hospital after being assaulting at Parklife Weekender in Manchester on Saturday (June 7) was protecting his girlfriend from being hit repeatedly with an inflatable toy.

As Manchester Evening News reports, a 26-year-old man was knocked unconscious in front of the Main Stage of the festival while watching Snoop Dogg at around 9:15pm.

Off-duty paramedics who were in the audience gave the man heart massage at the scene before stewards moved him to a 20-bed medical facility on site. However, he deteriorated and was rushed to North Manchester General Hospital. He has now been moved to Hope Hospital where he remains in a critical condition as doctors treat a bleed to his brain.

Greater Manchester Police say the man they believe is responsible for the attack is approximately 25 years old, 6ft tall, with short, curly, black hair shaved at the sides.

A spokesperson for the Parklife festival told NME yesterday: "We pride ourselves on a history of Parklife Weekender without any incidents. We regret that an isolated incident has taken place at this year's event, however medics were on the scene within minutes of it taking place.

"We will update as soon as we can and we are in constant contact with the medical services and police to help as much as possible. We urge festival goers to help the police identify the individual involved in the incident and contact them if they have any information at all."

In a separate incident, two men were stabbed at the same festival, also on Saturday (June 7). Reports suggest the men were wounded 'during a brawl' at the festival in the city's Heaton Park. One of the men was taken to Manchester Royal Infirmary with serious but non-life threatening injuries whilst the other was treated on site. Two men were arrested after police were called to the site at around 7.30pm.

The first day of Parklife Weekender (June 7) saw performances from Snoop Dogg, A$AP Rocky and Rudimental while Sunday (June 8) brought a headline set from Foals as well as performances from Jamie xx, Warpaint and Disclosure.

Bobby Womack to headline free London festival

May 17, 2014 10:42

The soul singer will appear at the Walthamstow Garden Party in July

Bobby Womack is to headline a free London festival this summer.

The legendary soul singer will appear at the Walthamstow Garden Party in Lloyd Park over the weekend of July 26-27. The event is being hosted by The Barbican and Create London alongside Waltham Forest Council and will also see sets from a global host of acts, including Ibibio Sound Machine, The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, Chicha Libre, the Jaipur Kawa Brass Band, Söndörg?, Debademba, Tiken Jah Fakoly, The Excitements, Kobo Town, the E17 Jazz Collective and MC Afrikan Boy.

Bobby Womack released his last album, 'The Bravest Man In The Universe', in 2012, on which he worked with XL label boss Richard Russell and Damon Albarn. Despite struggling with cancer and Alzheimer's since its release, he has continued to write, record and tour, including playing a slot at Glastonbury last summer and UK shows earlier this year.

Speaking out about his plans for his new record, which will be his 28th studio album, Womack previously said: "I told Damon and Richard that whenever they're available to record I will make myself available but I was already working on a new album. I have Stevie Wonder on it, I have Rod Stewart, Levert, Snoop Dogg is on it...".

He continued: "I have a lot of songs where you hear Stevie Wonder singing the song and you hear me on the same song, so you really get the style, because I think that’s important. You don't get that style anymore. Like Sam Cooke and Ray Charles."

Jay Z and Beyoncé tease joint tour with star-studded movie trailer - watch

May 18, 2014 14:01

The married pair head out on the road together this summer in North America

Jay Z and Beyoncé have trailed their joint tour with a fake movie trailer, which you can watch above.

The three and a half minute long promo for a fictional film entitled Run sees guest appearances from actors Sean Penn, Don Cheadle, Jake Gyllenhaal, Blake Lively, Rashida Jones, Emmy Rossum and more, with Jay Z and Beyoncé appearing as a Bonnie and Clyde style criminal couple. At the end of the trailer, the caption 'Coming Never' appears on screen. The trailer was directed by music video director Melina Matsoukas.

The trailer is to promote the pair's joint 'On The Run' tour, set to take place in the US this summer. The married couple regularly appear during each other's live shows, with Jay Z performing with Beyoncé in London earlier this year when the Mrs Carter Tour arrived at the O2 Arena in February.

The tour will take in 16 dates through June, July and August and starts in Miami at the Sun Life Stadium on June 25. The tour will then continue through the USA and Canada, stopping at Beyoncé's home town of Houston, Texas on July 18. The final date on the tour will come on August 6 at San Francisco's AT&T Park.

Jay Z, Beyoncé and Solange have released a statement after footage was posted online which appeared to show Solange attacking her sister's rapper husband in a lift. A statement given to Associated Press, issued on behalf of all of them, said "Jay and Solange each assume their share of responsibility for what has occurred". They describe it as an "unfortunate incident".

It adds: "But the most important thing is that our family has worked through it. They both acknowledge their role in this private matter that has played out in the public. They both have apologised to each other and we have moved forward as a united family. At the end of the day families have problems and we’re no different. We love each other and above all we are family. We’ve put this behind us and hope everyone else will do the same," it concludes.

The altercation, between Solange and her brother-in-law Jay Z, took place at the Standard Hotel in New York at an after-party for the annual Met Gala on May 5.

Joss Stone murder plotters appeal sentences

May 17, 2014 13:32

Junior Bradshaw and Kevin Liverpool were jailed last year for the crime

The two men found guilty of plotting to kill singer Joss Stone are appealing their sentences.

Last year Junior Bradshaw and Kevin Liverpool were both found guilty of planning to kill, injure and rob the singer at her Devon home in 2011, after being found by police in possession of weapons including a samurai sword. Bradshaw was jailed for 18 years and Liverpool was jailed for life, alongside the recommendation of a minimum term of 10 years and eight months.

BBC News reports that the men have appealed their sentences, with both appearing at the hearing. London's Court of Appeal are set to announce their decision on May 20.

Joss Stone previously said that she "felt sorry" for the two men. "There was a big part of me that felt sorry for them, sorry for their mums. I kept thinking, ‘What drives people to do something so awful as this?’ I thought about their mums, how they must feel. Someone comes to their door and says, 'Your child has tried to murder someone'," said Stone. "I did actually want to ask them why. Was it because I sang a song they hated?"

Foo Fighters play surprise New Orleans show

May 18, 2014 17:25

Arcade Fire's Win Butler and RĂ©gine Chassagne checked out the Preservation Hall courtyard gig

Foo Fighters played a surprise show in New Orleans last night (May 17).

Arcade Fire's Win Butler and RĂ©gine Chassagne checked out the Preservation Hall courtyard gig and also joined the venue's legendary Preservation Hall Jazz Band onstage for a rendition of traditional New Orleans song 'Iko Iko', as the jazz band opened up for Dave Grohl's group. The Preservation Hall Jazz Band later joined Foo Fighters onstage with musician Trombone Shorty for a brass-assisted rendition of 'This Is A Call', reports Consequence of Sound.

Grohl discussed the recording process for the Foo Fighters' new album with the crowd during the 90 minute long gig, which shut down a whole block of the city. "We've been to a lot of great places, we've jammed with a lot of great people," said Grohl. "But this week in this city has changed our band forever." The band had been recording with producer Butch Vig in the venue prior to the show.

Foo Fighters will release their new album this autumn. The record will feature a host of special guests from eight cities in the US and an eight-part TV series for HBO will document its making.

Each of the eight episodes of the HBO show will see the band travel to a different US city to write and record songs for the album: Chicago, Austin, Nashville, Los Angeles, Seattle, New Orleans, Washington, DC and New York. In each location, they have visited - or will visit - a renowned studio to record a track for the album, that Grohl describes as "a love letter to the history of American music". Each song is to feature local musical figures, and every lyric will be written on the very last day of each session. Guests include Chicago bluesman Buddy Guy.

Earlier this month, the band played a career-spanning set at Washington DC's 9.30 Club. Last month they shared pictures of the recording sessions for their new album.

Michael Jackson hologram to appear at Billboard Music Awards

May 18, 2014 13:23

The hologram will perform 'Slave to the Rhythm' from posthumous album 'Xscape'

A Michael Jackson hologram is set to appear at the Billboard Music Awards tonight (May 18).

The performance was supposed to be a secret, but a ruling by a federal judge which rejected a lawsuit from hologram companies Hologram USA Inc and Musion Das Hologram Ltd - who made the Tupac hologram at 2012's Coachella Festival and hoped to stop the performance - made the news of the event public, reports LA Times.

The hologram will perform 'Slave to the Rhythm' from the late singer's current posthumous album 'Xscape'. The hologram companies wanted to the halt the performance after alleging that a competitor was using their technology without their permission. Judge Kent Dawson said there was insufficient evidence to prove that Hologram USA Inc and Musion Das Hologram Ltd's patents were being used for the Jackson hologram. The Billboard Awards take place tonight at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Jackson's posthumous release 'Xscape' was released on Monday (May 12) and looks set to go straight to Number One in the UK tonight. The album includes eight unreleased songs worked on by contemporary artists and producers, including Timbaland and Stargate. The album is the project of executive producer LA Reid, who was granted unlimited access to four decades' worth of Jackson's vocal material.

BLOG: Michael Jackson's 'Xscape' album: Why it adds nothing to a legend's legacy

Jackson's closest competition in the Official UK Album Charts this week comes from The Black Keys. Speaking about the release of a new album from the King Of Pop, Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney said: "[It's] some fucking bullshit that sucks so bad that it took them three years after he died to make it listenable."

Monty Python's Terry Gilliam says troupe's reunion is 'depressing'

May 17, 2014

He adds that the comedy group have 'become the Establishment we took the piss out of'

Monty Python's Terry Gilliam has said that he find's the troupe's reunion 'depressing'.

The comedy group will play a series of reunion shows at London's O2 Arena this July. Although they were originally scheduled to play only one show, they added an extra four dates after tickets for the first performance sold out in 43.5 seconds. The show will contain new material as well as some "greatest hits" and material they've never performed live onstage before, plus animation from Terry Gilliam. The troupe last performed live at the Hollywood Bowl in July, 1980. They last performed in London at Drury Lane Theatre in 1974.

Now, in an interview with the Evening Standard, Gilliam has said that they have "sold out" by getting back together again. "The truth is I find it depressing that we’re getting back together again," he commented. "It’s like, we worked so hard to get careers beyond it, to get to this stage, and now we’re being dragged back again."

Saying "in the end we sold out", he also explained that it was harder for the group to do comedy anymore because "we’ve become the Establishment we took the piss out of".

Meanwhile, the album 'Monty Python Sings (Again)' will be released on June 9 and feature five new tracks alongside some of Monty Python's best known comedy songs. The album was first released in 1989 and features tracks from the group's films and TV work, including 'Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life' and 'Knights of the Round Table (Camelot Song)'.

New Star Wars film confirms shooting has begun

May 17, 2014

Production company Bad Robot tweeted a picture of a clapperboard with the #dayone hashtag

Shooting has begun on the new Star Wars film, it has been confirmed.

The film's production company Bad Robot tweeted a picture of a clapperboard with the #dayone hashtag, which you can see below. Sand on the clapperboard seems to suggest that scenes are being shot in Abu Dhabi, where it is thought Luke Skywalker's home planet of Tatooine is being rebuilt.

The seventh installment of the much loved franchise will also shoot at London's Pinewood studios ahead of a December 2015 release. Original stars Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill will return for the film. Disney recently suggested they will release at least three Star Wars spin-off films in the next 10 years in addition to the three they have already committed to making.

Oscar Isaac recently said that director JJ Abrams' approach to making the next instalment in the series of much loved films is "refreshing". The actor recently joined fellow newcomers Adam Driver, Domhnall Gleeson and Andy Serkis in the cast for Star Wars: Epsiode VII and spoke to Digital Spy about his enthusiasm for his currently unconfirmed character.

"There was about a month where I already knew that I'd been cast, before the announcement, so it was tough to keep it under wraps," Isaac said. "But you know, secrets can be fun. I was a huge Star Wars fan growing up – my family collects the toys, and we had Star Wars parties where everyone would dress up as their favourite character."

Moscow security department bans parade to honour Eurovision winner Conchita Wurst

May 16, 2014 21:04

An application for The Conchita Wurst March of Bearded Women and Men was rejected

Russian officials have banned a parade set to honour Eurovision winner, Austrian drag act Conchita Wurst.

The application for the Conchita Wurst March of Bearded Women and Men was denied by Moscow's security department, reports The Guardian. It was hoped that the parade would take place on May 27, to celebrate the 21st anniversary of the legalisation of homosexuality in Russia.

Billboard writes that a spokesperson for the security department said that the application for the march was rejected because of "concerns it would provoke clashes between gays and their opponents."

Conchita Wurst previously said that she hoped her Eurovision victory would help to spread a message of tolerance and respect around Europe. Wurst, real name Tom Neuwirth, was crowned winner of the 59th annual Eurovision Song Contest earlier this month. In Vienna she told reporters that the victory was not just personal, "but a victory for those people who believe in a future that can function without discrimination and is based on tolerance and respect".

The singer won the competition in Denmark capital Copenhagen with the song 'Rise Like a Phoenix', collecting 290 points. The Netherlands finished second with 238 points, with Sweden in third place with 218 points. After being crowned winner at the ceremony, Wurst shouted: "We are unity and we are unstoppable".

In Vienna, she explained: "That was obviously meant for certain politicians whom we all know". Asked if she was talking about Vladimir Putin, whose anti-gay laws in Russia have come under fierce criticism, Wurst said "among others".

Action Bronson confirms new album will be called 'Mr Wonderful'

May 16, 2014 20:00

The rapper is currently on tour in the UK

Rapper Action Bronson has confirmed the name of the album he is currently working on as 'Mr Wonderful'.

It will follow a number of mixtapes and last year's 'Saaab Stories' EP. He revealed the news of his solo major label debut on Twitter, writing:

Speaking about the album to NME, he commented: "The album is sounding incredible. The whole album is a standout. I don't care about individual songs, I'm trying to make a complete, classic project. I just do my music uninfluenced by anybody else, or current trends, and it comes together at the end. Nothing needs to have a fucking theme all the time. This is just rap. I'm not trying to make people think I'm some sort of scientific wizard or inspirational poet. Fuck that! It's just happy, funny, rugged, rough rap."

Action Bronson is mid-way through a UK tour, playing Birmingham Institute tonight (May 16) and London Forum tomorrow (May 17). Speaking to NME about the tour, he commented: "People should expect the unexpected. My UK tour is going to be exciting. You can see high-flying acrobats, all kinds of dangerous stunts, just straight up real rapping and entertainment for the whole family".

Meanwhile, the rapper is starring in a new online series titled Fuck, That's Delicious. The heavyweight rapper previously had a career as a gourmet chef in New York, and the series will chronicle his culinary experiences on his world tour on Munchies, a subsidiary of VICE.

"The food show allows me to share my passion," Bronson told NME. "Both my mother and grandmother were cooks, so I learned it from them. I like to cook to Spanish and Latin music. If you're in the kitchen, you have to listen to rhythms, so I'd suggest bands like El Gran Combo De Puerto Rico and, if you like piano, Larry Harlow and Eddie Palmieri."

May 17, 2014 9:40

Haim, Phoenix, Future Islands, Interpol and Death Grips will also play on August 23-24

The Strokes are set to headline this summer's FYF Fest in Los Angeles.

Also topping the bill at the two day event in Downtown LA are Phoenix, with Interpol, Slowdive, Haim, Blood Orange, Grimes, Future Islands, Death Grips, Darkside, Jamie xx, Earl Sweatshirt, Against Me, Real Estate, Mac Demarco and Four Tet also on the bill. In addition there will be separate performances from The Strokes' Albert Hammond Jr and Julian Casablancas and The Voidz.

The event takes place August 23-24 at LA Sports Arena and Exposition Park and tickets go on sale May 22 and 12pm (PT). For more information on the festival, visit FYFFest.com.

Meanwhile, The Strokes have announced plans for a show on May 31 at the 1,800 capacity Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York. The show will act as a warm up gig for the band's headline set at the Governors Ball festival on Randall's Island in New York City, which takes place June 6-8. Port Chester is roughly 25 miles from New York City.

Albert Hammond Jr recently said that The Strokes will release a new album before they properly tour again. The guitarist told Gigwise:

"I know that when The Strokes tour again, it will be because we put something out – even though we didn't tour the last one. Doing a few festivals before you put something out is kind of gearing up the big machine, it just kind of helps everyone get ready, mentally, financially and it brings you back to your audience. You can see the audience's reaction to your music and you just 'feel' again."

Writing at Deryckwhibley.net in a post entitled Rock Bottom, the frontman apologised to fans for being "m.i.a" for the past month, explaining that he had been in hospital after falling unconscious due to his heavy drinking. Whibley revealed that his liver and kidneys had collapsed.

"I've been very sick in the hospital for a month and was pretty sick for a few weeks leading up to my trip to the hospital. The reason I got so sick is from all the hard boozing I've been doing over the years. It finally caught up to me. I was drinking hard every day," he wrote, explaining that his fiancee rushed him to hospital after his collapse and he was put in an intensive care unit. "I finally realized I can't drink anymore," he wrote. "If I have one drink the doc's say I will die. I'm not preaching or anything but just always drink responsibly."

However, he has said that the incident has inspired him to write new music. "Anyway I have my passion and inspiration back for writing music," said the former husband of Avril Lavigne. "I already have a few song ideas for new songs. Soon it will be time to start making an album and getting back to touring again."

Lily Allen plays cupid in promotional ice cream film - watch

May 17, 2014 11:50

The film is also narrated by the 'Sheezus' singer

Lily Allen plays a cupid in a new promotional film for ice cream.

The short film by Cornetto is narrated by the pop singer and also sees her playing a matchmaking doctor. Click above to watch the film about a love story between a tennis player and the lines umpire she knocks out during a match.

Lily Allen recently said that Kanye West is amused by the fact she named her new album 'Sheezus'. Allen marked her return to the pop music world with the release of the album earlier this month. The album features the singles 'Hard Out Here', 'Air Balloon' and 'Our Time' and its name is a play on the title of Kanye West's 2013 album, 'Yeezus'.

Earlier this year Allen expressed worry that Kanye West might react negatively to her referencing his work. However, Allen recently met with the rapper and his fiancée, Kim Kardashian at the Met Gala in New York and was relieved to discover that he was happy with the name. "I'm a really big fan of Kanye's so it was a little nod to him," she said during an appearance on The Today Show. "He hadn't heard it, it came out the day after, but he thought it was funny. And Kim said, 'I'm the real Sheezus.'"

Meanwhile, Allen also revealed recently that she turned down a cameo appearance in popular fantasy show, Game Of Thrones when she was asked to play the sister of Theon, who is played by her real life brother, Alfie Allen. She backed out when she realised that the storyline involved incest and would involve her filming sex scenes with her sibling.

Paul Simon and wife Edie Brickell appear in court for disorderly conduct case

May 17, 2014 15:28

The pair appeared briefly at the Superior Court in Norwalk, Connecticut

Paul Simon and his wife, the singer Edie Brickell, have appeared in court over their current disorderly conduct case.

Following the pair's arrest last month after an argument, they appeared briefly at the Superior Court in Norwalk, Connecticut yesterday (May 16) and held hands during the hearing, according to a report by Billboard.

They requested that cameras be banned from the courtroom, but Judge William Wenzel declined, stating: "Everyone who comes into this court is presumed innocent and our general policy is to allow open media access so I am overruling that request."

The next hearing is set for June 17. According to a police report about the incident which took place on April 26, Brickell said that Simon had shoved her during an argument and she had slapped him back. Simon was reported to have a cut on his ear and Brickell a bruise on her wrist.

After their arrest Brickell shared a joint song called 'Like To Get To Know You' on SoundCloud, which features Simon on backing vocals. "I'd like to get to know you again," sing the pair on the song. During their first appearance in court last month Simon told the judge that it was a rare argument that led to their arrests. Simon said: "Both of us are fine together. We had an argument and it's fairly atypical of us; neither of us has any fear or any reason to feel threatened and I don't feel I need to be protected."

Brickell said in a statement: "I got my feelings hurt, and I picked a fight with my husband. The police called it disorderly. Thank God it's orderly now." Police arrived at the singers' New Canaan home after receiving a 911 call from the property. Police discovered what they believed was a case of domestic violence upon their arrival. Simon and Brickell both said they did not feel threatened by the other following the arrest.

Brickell, who fronted Edie Brickell & New Bohemians, is Simon's third wife. The couple were married in 1992 and have three children.

The Black Keys make do with Number Two in Official Albums Chart for 'Turn Blue'

Michael Jackson has scored his 10th Official Albums Chart Number One album this evening (May 18) with posthumous release 'Xscape'.

The album includes eight unreleased songs worked on by contemporary artists and producers, including Timbaland and Stargate. The album is the project of executive producer LA Reid, who was granted unlimited access to four decades' worth of Jackson's vocal material.

Close behind, The Black Keys have had their highest ever charting UK album with 'Turn Blue' in at Number Two. Other new entries in the Top 40 include Foxes' debut album 'Glorious', which is in at Number Five and Blondie's 'Blondie 4(0)-Ever' collection - which is a greatest hits and their new album 'Ghosts Of Download' combined - at Number 16. Swans have had their highest charting UK album with 'To Be Kind' at Number 38.

Meanwhile, in the Official Singles Chart, Rita Ora has taken the Number One spot with 'I Will Never Let You Down', her fourth chart topping track. "I've just found out I'm Number One with 'I Will Never Let You Down' and it's amazing!" said the singer. "It's crazy that it's the fourth one! I'm honoured. As you can see, I have no words! I can't believe it… I'm just so happy that my fans are so supportive because this is a special, personal song for me." The track was written by Ora's boyfriend Calvin Harris, and is the ninth Number One that the producer and DJ has been involved with. Ora added: "He's had such an incredible career in his own right. It was such a clear, easy song to do. There was nobody else involved other than me and Calvin. It all happened really naturally."

Eurovision Song Contest winner, Austrian drag act Conchita Wurst had this week's second highest new entry, with 'Rise Like A Phoenix' coming at Number 17.

Kanye West and Kim Kardashian to marry next week in Florence

May 16, 2014 18:33

The pair have hired a 16th century Italian villa for their nuptials

Kanye West and Kim Kardashian are set to marry next week in Florence.

The pair will get hitched at Belvedere Fort, which is a 16th century villa, on May 24. It was rented for 300,000 euros (£244,000), reports BBC Newsbeat.

James Franco recently claimed that Kanye West invited him and Seth Rogen to perform their parody of his song 'Bound 2' at his upcoming wedding. The actors filmed a spoof version of West's video for the song, which featured the rapper and his fiancée riding a motorbike through the desert while locked in a passionate embrace. The spoof version saw Franco and Rogen kissing and went viral.

Speaking on ABC's The View, Franco revealed that he and Rogen had received the offer from the couple ahead of their wedding, when it was previously thought that the pair would be wed in France: "Kim loved the video, and we didn't hear back from Kanye, so we kind of felt like, 'He's not bashing us, but he probably hates it but he's not going to say anything.' But then two weeks ago, we got a call from Kanye. Seth and I were on the phone," said Franco. "We thought he was just going to let us have it. But he loved it! He wanted us to perform it live the night before his wedding at Versailles."

However, attendees at the wedding are unlikely to see the live action version of the spoof video: "It would have been awesome for about 20 seconds, but then there would be Seth with his shirt off in front all the Kardashians," admitted Franco.

Earlier this year it was reported that West had cancelled an Australian tour in order to finish work on his new album, the follow up to 2013's 'Yeezus'.

Kanye West and Kim Kardashian's wedding will 'absolutely' take place in Versailles, not Italy

May 18, 2014 10:49

New reports dismiss recent suggestions that the pair will wed in a 16th century villa in Florence

New reports have said that Kanye West and Kim Kardashian's wedding will 'absolutely' take place at the Palace of Versailles in France and not Florence in Italy, as was recently suggested.

It was previously reported that the pair would be getting hitched at 16th century villa Belvedere Fort on May 24 by BBC Newsbeat, however, US gossip site TMZ has nixed those suggestions, stating that the pair will wed in lavish Versailles, following a week of parties around France.

Thank you for such a beautiful and warm welcome to your country. I've unfortunately had to postpone tonight’s show in Tokyo. I came down with a virus on Friday and following a visit from doctors, I've been told not to perform tonight. I am very sorry to all my fans as I was greatly looking forward to the concert, but the situation is out of my hands. Along with the doctors, I'm doing all I can to ensure I will be better for tomorrow night's show and the rest of my time in Japan. We are planning to replay this show on Monday. Speaking about the video, McCartney commented: "I woke up one morning with an image in my head of me standing with a large robot. I thought it might be something that could be used for the cover of my album 'New' but instead the idea turned out to be for my music video for 'Appreciate'. Together with the people who had done the puppetry for the worldwide hit War Horse we developed the robot who became Newman." Chris Brown diagnosed with bipolar disorder at rehab facility

March 1, 2014 10:48

Troubled singer also suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder

Chris Brown has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder by the rehab facility where he's receiving treatment.

According to court documents obtained by E! News, the clinic has determined that the singer suffers from both ailments, which are the causes of his history of aggression.

In a letter from the unnamed facility, they wrote: "Mr Brown will also require close supervision by his treating physician in order to ensure his bipolar mental health condition remains stable. It is not uncommon for patients with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Bipolar II to use substances to self-medicate their biomedical mood swings and trauma triggers.

"Mr Brown became aggressive and acted out physically due to his untreated mental health disorder, severe sleep deprivation, inappropriate self-medicating and untreated PTSD," they said.

Representatives at the rehab facility added that Brown has been "beyond exemplary" in performing his community service requirements, while Superior Court Judge James Brandlin noted that Brown "has responded well to the dual diagnosis treatment."

The singer was in court today (February 28) for a progress hearing in his 2009 assault case against Rihanna. The same day, Brown tweeted: "Never really goes the way u plan. #LIFE."

Last month, Brown was accused of beating up a man over a basketball foul. Malcolm Ausbon filed a lawsuit with the Superior Court of California in Los Angeles on February 13 claiming to have been the victim of an attack at the hands of Brown and his entourage. Ausbon described the incident as occurring during a basketball at a 24 Hour Fitness gym.

Actor Philip Seymour Hoffman died from a toxic mix of drugs

March 1, 2014

'Capote' actor died on February 2 aged 46

Actor Philip Seymour Hoffman died from a toxic mix of heroin and other drugs, US officials have said.

A spokeswoman for the New York City medical examiner stated Hoffman died from a mix of heroin, cocaine, amphetamines and benzodiazepines, which are psychoactive drugs such as Librium that work as muscle relaxants.

The death was ruled an accident. Police had been investigating his death as a suspected drug overdose. Law enforcement officials have said Hoffman was found on February 2 with a needle in his arm, and tests found heroin in samples from at least 50 packets in his Manhattan apartment. The 46-year-old star of 'Capote' and 'The Master' said in interviews last year that he had sought treatment for a heroin problem after 23 years of sobriety.

The actor, who won an Oscar for his leading role in Capote and garnered critical acclaim throughout his career for turns in films such as The Master, Magnolia and Almost Famous, was found by emergency services in his New York home.

A statement released by Hoffman's family the day after his death described the loss as "tragic and sudden". They said: "We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Phil and appreciate the outpouring of love and support we have received from everyone."

In a career which included roles in over 60 films, he won the Best Actor Oscar for his performance in the biopic of writer Truman Capote's life, and also picked up three Best Supporting Actor nominations for roles in 'The Master', 'Charlie Wilson's War' and 'Doubt'.

In addition to his roles in independent films, including 'Synecdoche, New York' and 'Boogie Nights', Hoffman also starred in a number of Hollywood blockbusters such as 'Mission Impossible 3'. His most recent role was in 'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire'. There is expected to be a tribute to him at the Academy Awards tomorrow evening (March 2).

'Fantastic Four' reboot will be 'nothing like the originals' says Matthew Vaughn

March 1, 2014

Producer keen to distance remake from two existing films

Matthew Vaughn claims the Fantastic Four reboot he's working on will be nothing like the original.

The 2005 film starred Jessica Alba, Ioan Gruffudd, Chris Evans and Michael Chiklis as Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman, Reed Richards/Mr Fantastic, Johnny Storm/The Human Torch and Ben Grimm/The Thing respectively. As in the comic books, which began in 1961, they gained superpowers after exposure to cosmic rays during a scientific mission in outer space. The cast returned for 2007 sequel Rise Of The Silver Surfer, which saw Doug Jones join the cast as the titular herald of Galactus. The films were widely panned by critics upon release, although they did perform relatively well at the box office.

In light of Marvel's recent successes with Avengers Assemble and the Thor and Captain America series, and the forthcoming Guardians Of The Galaxy, they are seen as old-fashioned and not in keeping with the rest of the Marvel film universe.

In an interview with Empire discussing the reboot, due in cinemas on June 19, 2015, Vaughn said: "It's a total reboot that's for sure. It's got nothing to with the other bloody ones. It's not a stretchy guy and a guy running around in rock that looks like it's made of polystyrene. And it's not a comedy."

The new film will star Kate Mara, Miles Teller, Michael B Jordan and Jamie Bell in the roles of the Invisible Woman, the Human Torch, Mr Fantastic and the Thing. Vaughn's production credits include Kick-Ass, which he also directed, and Kick-Ass 2, while as a director, he was in charge of X-Men: First Class.
