Morrissey wishes England squad good luck ahead of World Cup

June 9, 2014 17:20

The former Smiths singer was staying in same hotel as team in Miami and spoke to Leighton Baines

Morrissey has wished the England team good luck at the World Cup finals in Brazil after bumping into the players in a Miami hotel last week.

England player Leighton Baines revealed the conversation he had with the singer after introducing himself in a hotel the squad were staying in while preparing for this year's tournament. The defender admitted that he was one of the few players who actually recognised Morrissey and approached him to say hello.

"I had a chat with him. I was a bit nervous about going to speak to him to be honest. I wasn't sure how it would be received," Baines told The Mirror. "I was one of the few in the squad who actually knew who he was, which was disappointing enough. I was the only one who went over."

Admitting that besides himself only coach Gary Neville knew who Morrissey was, Baines continued: "I knew he'd played the night before and that he had a couple of gigs coming up, so I mentioned those and he wished us good luck." England's World Cup campaign kicks off on Saturday (June 14) when they face Italy.

Meanwhile, Morrissey was recently forced to cancel a gig in Atlanta, Georgia through ill health as well as postpone a show at the Revel Casino Hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

LOS ANGELES | Mon Apr 22, 2013 9:35pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Boy band the Backstreet Boys - now all grown men - on Monday marked their 20th anniversary and their upcoming world tour by getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

"Backstreet is Back ... and we aren't going anywhere," Nick Carter, 33, told fans as all five members of the 1990s band gathered to unveil their star - located right next to another popular boy band, Boyz II Men.

The close harmony singers were visibly emotional as they thanked their families and fans for their support over the years.

"What an honor it is," said Kevin Richardson, 40, holding back tears. "What a beautiful day. What another beautiful way to celebrate 20 years together."

Formed in 1993 in Florida, the Backstreet Boys went on to sell more than 130 million albums worldwide and score hits like "I Want It That Way," and "Shape of My Heart."

The other members of the group are Brian Littrell, A.J. McLean and Howie Dorough.

After several hiatuses in the 2000s and the departure of Richardson, the five original members officially got back together last year and will embark on a world tour in May, starting in China.

Backstreet Boys are also due to release a new album this summer, and a music documentary in 2014.

The World Still Loves American Music. But Why, Exactly?

Monday, October 29, 2012
by  paul

It's an age-old question: if music is pouring out of every corner of the globe, why is American music so popular on the world stage?  Especially in a borderless, digitally-liberated media environment?  And even in countries that deeply resent America, or whose cultures are radically different?

Sitting in a Starbucks in Seoul, South Korea, which is right next to a Dunkin' Donuts, the question is impossible to avoid.  Outside of the obvious language differences, this looks exactly like a Starbucks in LA, almost down to the music.  I'm listening to Norah Jones, Nancy Sinatra, even Bobby McFerrin, but not one Korean singer.

It's not that Korean music isn't all around.  There's K-Pop and PSY, of course, and also lots of syrupy Korean ballads.  But even the Korean music video channel finds Jay-Z, Alicia Keys, Beyonce, and Britney Spears heavily layered into rotation.  Flip on a Korean baseball game, and it's Nickelback and Earth, Wind & Fire (yes) during the breaks.  Watch the Korean-commentated World Series, and its 30 Seconds to Mars to transition back from the commercials.

This is deeper than just music in the background; American pop culture and music are deeply seeped into this culture - consciously or otherwise.  While searching for my hotel, I was saved by a young woman who graciously guided me through the Seoul maze.  She was wearing a stylized army jacket with Guns n' Roses emblazoned on the back, yet she'd never really heard of the group.  I told her it was mostly an 80s and 90s thing, but a legendary rock group to this day.  "Sort of like Nirvana," she responded.  We left it at that.

You can say this is isolated, but American music - and the celebrities attached to it - travel extremely well.  While lingering around France after MIDEM died down last year, I started to meet some locals.  Once the networking and industry crowds left, the hotel kept playing American pop non-stop; a local limo driver showed me pictures of the time he escorted members of Black Eyed Peas around.  The hotel concierge, who also worked for a yacht reservation company, loved to tell me about Diddy's failed pissing contests with Russian billionaires on the Riviera.  These were highlights... yes, for French people.

It's even seeped into abandoned junkie houses in Siberia.  Edgy magazine Vice once took their cameras into the region's most depressing, heroine-infested buildings, and the discussion turned to Rihanna.  The junkies were discussing whether they liked the singer, pointing to a magazine cover.  What?

Of course, American music doesn't play well everywhere, and its not like other cultures (like the UK) don't also export well.  But American music oftentimes permeates the most foreign environments, often with little-to-no protection against piracy.  It's almost like an extension of the US itself: decimated and demoralized, major labels still retain the power to break major music superstars, but lack the ability to monetize it properly.  It's hard to say if this is a machine that keeps going, or what happens after it breaks down.

Kanye West Premieres 'Lost in the World' Film: Watch

by David Greenwald, L.A.  |   May 04, 2012 7:44 EDT

After a rush of new material from Kanye West in April, the MC is turning to the archives for his latest video.

The Bon Iver-aided "Lost in the World," from 2010's "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy," got the video treatment on Friday. In typical Yeezy fashion, the black-and-white video has been dubbed an "exclusive film" for its release on SHOWstudio.com, a site devoted to fashion film. West worked on the film with director Ruth Hogben, whose resume includes such fashion clients as Rick Owens and the rapper's oft-name-dropped Louis Vuitton.

"Strobe effects are used in this video," it warns, before a flashing song title gives way to more relaxing, cloud-filled images and dancing models.

Nicki Minaj Talks World Tour, 'Roman Reloaded,' on 'Today' Show: Watch

by Khalila Douze, N.Y.  |   April 06, 2012 2:50 EDT

Early this morning (April 5), Nicki Minaj, decked in an a "black everything" 'fit,  stopped through "Today" to chat and perform a few hits from "Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded" (April 3).

Nicki Minaj's 25 Most Outrageous Outfits

Before performing the RedOne-produced track "Starships" and "Right By My Side," Minaj sat down to discuss Madonna, women of power, "Roman Reloaded," and touring.

The rapstress, who has worked with and spoken highly of Madonna, lists the legend as one of the inspirations behind her own evolution: "She's re-invented not only herself but pop culture... What inspires me about Madonna is that she's able to balance this, all of this, with her family and her personal life."

Nicki continued to share her views on women of power. "I feel like a lot of women in power, or successful women, as successful as they are they have that desire to still be loved, to still be always great, to still be approved. And it's like no matter how many times you tell them they're great, they don't believe it."

Before hitting the stage, Minaj touched on her sophomore full-length and upcoming worldwide tour. '"I don't get the jitters at all. Because this one, honestly, it's a better album. It's so much more well-rounded. It's way more songs. Everything is way more exciting on this album," Nicki said. "I'm about to start my world tour this year. My fans across seas have been going crazy. I'm just excited, more than anything, more than the album, eventually people are going to buy the album, but more than anything for me the fact this album is now  done and out of the way and I can go see my fans. I haven't been able to really touch and be one on one with them in a long time."

Nicki Minaj's 'Roman' Ready for No. 1 on Billboard 200

"Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded" is headed for No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and is expected to reach sales of 200,0000-250,00 copies by the end of its first week.
