Jailed Pussy Riot members to be released

December 19, 2013 12:08

Punk band members are to be freed from Russian prison after amnesty deal is agreed

Pussy Riot's Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina will be freed from prison in Russia within days, it has been reported.

The feminist punk collective's members were given two-year sentences in August 2012 after their now infamous "punk prayer" protest at Moscow's Cathedral Of Christ The Savior. They were taken to a prison camp in Berniki in the remote Ural Mountains.

The Guardian reports that Tolokonnikova and Alyokhina are being set free as part of an amnesty approved by Russia's parliament yesterday (December 18) to mark the 20th anniversary of Russia's post-Soviet constitution. It's believed that the amnesty has been announced in an effort to improve Russia's image ahead of the 2014 Winter Olympics, which begin in Sochi in January.

The amnesty will lead to the freeing of 500,000 prisoners, including the 'Arctic 30' Greenpeace protesters who were arrested earlier this year when some of the activists tried to scale Russia's first offshore oil platform.

"It's a very narrow amnesty. I'm very glad it applies to my clients," said Pussy Riot's lawyer Irina Khrunova to Reuters.

Tolokonnikova and Alyokhina were both due to be released in June, having served some of their sentence prior to their trial. Speaking to The Guardian, Petya Verzilov, Tolokonnikova's husband says: "They are slightly sceptical of course. When you're living in these conditions it's hard to think about the Duma passing some bill, and it seems like it could never happen, so it's a big surprise for them that it does actually seem to be happening."

Earlier this year Alyokhina went on hunger strike to protest prison conditions, demanding officials got rid of the locks on the doors of workshops. She spoke to NME from prison in June, revealing that she didn't expect to be released before 2014.

The amnesty which should see Tolokonnikova and Alyokina's release is backed by Russia's president, Vladimir Putin. It mainly concerns first-time offenders, minors and women with small children with some activist complaining the group of people freed is not large enough.

He commented:

"We all live in Nashville now. All The Raconteurs and all The Dead Weather live in Nashville now, so we often go on trips together, because we're all just good pals. We've recorded some things, too. And Brendan and The Raconteurs just built a new studio right in town, so it's a lot of great inspiration going around."

The Raconteurs released two albums, 2006's 'Broken Boy Soldiers' and 2008's 'Consolers of the Lonely'.

Rod Stewart's Faces bandmates dismiss 2015 reunion plans

December 20, 2013 9:59

The frontman had previously said that the band would be reforming in a couple of years

Rod Stewart's former Faces bandmates have dismissed his suggestion that the band would be getting back together in 2015.

Ian McLagan has spoken out, claiming that Stewart has not yet contacted him and Kenney Jones regarding a reunion and that even if he did, "they've bigger fish to fry".

Speaking to Uncut, keyboardist McLagan said that he and drummer Jones will first be focusing on reuniting the Small Faces, the band the Faces were later to become, but which did not involve Stewart. McLagan commented: "Why would we fuck around with the Faces when we've got bigger fish to fry?" He added that Stewart will "have to wait until 2016 because 2015 is the Small Faces' year."

Earlier this month, Stewart said that he would likely play with his old band the Faces in 2015. Speaking to WZLX radio station in Boston, he said that he and Ronnie Wood were planning a Faces reunion for the year after next. He commented: "I think we have got much more of a chance of getting the Faces back together, in fact, Ronnie's office is talking to my people, and we're ear-marking 2015." Of this, McLagan said: "It's interesting that Rod announces these things without talking to me or Kenney."

The Faces reunited in 2010 and played a number of shows with Simply Red's Mick Hucknall on lead vocals in place of Stewart, including a headline performance at the Vintage at Goodwood Festival, and the band toured in 2011. In 2012 Hucknall sang 'Stay With Me' at the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction ceremony in Cleveland, Ohio, even though Stewart had planned to perform with the band, but later came down with the flu. Stewart last played with the band at the Brit Awards in 1993.

N-Dubz member Fazer files for bankruptcy

December 20, 2013 10:26

Court reports reveal rapper's financial difficulties

Former N-Dubz member Fazer has declared bankruptcy, court records reveal.

The rapper – real named Richard Rawson – filed for the status on December 4 using a North London address.

Fazer, pictured left, and fellow bandmates Dappy and Tulisa Contostavlos have been taking a break from the band since releasing their greatest hits album in 2011. Eight of their tracks placed in the UK Singles Chart, including 'Number 1', recorded with Tinchy Stryder, which reached the top spot.

Despite earlier success, all three former N-Dubz members have had a difficult 2013. Tulisa Contostavlos headed to court today (December 19) to deny being concerned with the supply of Class A drugs. She is accused of selling 13.9 grams of cocaine to an undercover reporter as part of a £860 deal.

In November Dappy had to get hospital treatment after falling from a horse and getting kicked in the face. More than 8,000 people have now signed a petition to get the animal given the Brit Award for 'Outstanding Contribution to Music'.

He was also give a six-month suspended sentence over assault and affray charges in February.

Vladimir Putin says Pussy Riot engaged in activities 'humiliating for women'

December 20, 2013 8:55

The two jailed activists will be released from prison 'within days'

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that he believes that the members of Pussy Riot engaged in activities "humiliating for women".

Speaking yesterday (December 19) at a press conference, Putin explained that he felt "pity" for the jailed Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina as they "started to engage in activities which are humiliating for women", reports The Telegraph.

He continued: "It's just a PR campaign but they crossed a line... The court decided to punish them, not for that, but for other actions." Tolokonnikova and Alyokhina will reportedly be freed from prison in Russia within days as part of an amnesty approved by Russia's parliament to mark the 20th anniversary of Russia's post-Soviet constitution. The amnesty will lead to the freeing of 500,000 prisoners, including the 'Arctic 30' Greenpeace protesters who were arrested earlier this year when some of the activists tried to scale Russia's first offshore oil platform.

Speaking about the amnesty yesterday, Putin added: "The amnesty has nothing to do with Greenpeace or this band... We need to humanise, to make our criminal code more humane to mark the 20 year anniversary of the constitution."

The feminist punk collective's members were given two-year sentences in August 2012 after their now infamous "punk prayer" protest at Moscow's Cathedral Of Christ The Savior. They were taken to a prison camp in Berniki in the remote Ural Mountains.

Robin Thicke named 'Sexist of the Year' by women's coalition

December 20, 2013 8:35

The 'Blurred Lines' singer has been called a 'worthy winner' of the End Violence Against Women Coalition poll

Robin Thicke has been named 'Sexist of the Year' by a coalition of women's groups.

The 'Blurred Lines' artist came top of the poll conducted by the End Violence Against Women Coalition, which is made up of more than 60 women's rights groups, reports The Guardian. Sarah Green of the group said of their poll winner: "Our heartfelt congratulations to a worthy winner Robin Thicke for both his concerted sexist efforts, and in the end the platform he created for rejection of the use of women as objects to promote mediocre pop... Sexism might be de rigeur for some music industry 'creatives' but the times they are a-changin'."

The coalition said they would be awarding Thicke with a voucher so he could download Aretha Franklin's song 'Respect'. As well as drawing attention to his controversial 'Blurred Lines' video, and its contentious lyrics, they highlighted a number of quotes made by the singer, including a comment made to GQ magazine, in which he said: "People say, 'Hey, do you think this is degrading to women?' I'm like, 'Of course it is. What a pleasure it is to degrade a woman. I've never gotten to do that before'."

Robin Thicke's 'Blurred Lines' has been named the biggest-selling single of 2013. The singer's summer hit has sold well over 1million copies in the UK, reports the Official UK Charts Company, beating Daft Punk's 'Get Lucky' to the crown. 'Blurred Lines', which has sold 1.44million copies, has the edge by a few thousand over 'Get Lucky', which has sales of 1.28million. In third place is Avicii's 'Wake Me Up, Passenger's 'Let Me Go' is at Number Four and Naughty Boy, featuring up-and-coming star Sam Smith, is at Number Five with 'La La La'.

Paul Rudd in talks for 'Ant-Man' role, say reports

December 19, 2013 12:54

Reports say actor has edged ahead of Joseph Gordon-Levitt in studio's pecking order

Paul Rudd is in talks with Marvel about taking on the lead role in the forthcoming Ant-Man adaptation, according to reports.

The Wrap claims that Rudd has been involved in early negotiations with the studio about playing Hank Pym in Edgar Wright's big-screen treatment of the comic book, and is now favourite to land the role ahead of early front-runner Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

The character of Ant-Man made his Marvel comic book debut in 1962 but has never appeared on screen before. In the books he is the superhero alter ego of Dr Hank Pym, a scientist who invents a shrinking serum that makes him insect size. Once miniature, he is able to solve mysteries and take out bad guys.

Speaking previously about his plans for the film, Wright said he was eager to bring his own sensibilities and idiosyncrasies to the Hollywood project. "I think there will be some elements of my previous movies in there, and I think that's why Marvel wanted me to do it in the first place," he stated. "I don't think they hired me to do something completely anonymous. So it's fun – it's got lots of new elements. I'm excited about it."

As well as directing, Wright co-wrote the film's script with Joe Cornish, also his collaborator on the screenplay for The Adventures Of Tintin. Ant-Man has been scheduled to open in US cinemas on July 31, 2015 - just two weeks after the Batman v Superman movie - but its UK release date has yet to be confirmed.

Steps singer 'H' receives apology in court following Ian Watkins mix-up

December 19, 2013 13:32

Apology follows website accidentally publishing a picture of him alongside a story about convicted Lostprophets frontman

Pop star Ian 'H' Watkins has received an official apology in court from a website who published a picture of him alongside a story about convicted paedophile Ian Watkins, formerly of Lostprophets.

As reported at the time, entertainment website E! Online incorrectly published a photograph of the Steps singer (known to fans as H) in a story about the former Lostprophets singer, after he pleaded guilty to 13 sexual offences, including two of attempting to rape a baby.

Posting an update to fans on Facebook earlier today (December 19), 'H' wrote: "In Court this morning E! have publically apologised to me and a statement has been read in court to make the position clear. This was not something that I did lightly but it was important to me that a public statement was made so that there is no confusion going forward."

He continues: "I am really pleased that it has been resolved so quickly so that my family and I can try and move on from what has been an extremely distressing time."

Meanwhile, it has been reported that Ian Watkins is the subject of police investigations in Germany and the USA. Watkins was sentenced yesterday (December 18) in Cardiff Crown Court and was given a 29-year jail sentence as well as an extended license for six years after pleading guilty to 13 sexual offences.

During sentencing, Judge Justice Royce said that Watkins posed a "significant risk" to women and children and that he and the co-defendants had plumbed "new depths of depravity" and that the case was so extreme it "breaks new ground". He told them: "Any decent person looking at or listening to material here would experience shock, revulsion, anger and incredulity." Read the full story from the trial here.
