Lena Dunham performs interpretative dance as Sia sings 'Chandelier' on US TV – watch

June 10, 2014 8:48

'Girls' actress was special guest for 'Late Night with Seth Myers' performance

Lena Dunham joined Sia for a performance of the singer-songwriter's new single 'Chandelier' on US TV last night (June 9). See above to watch now.

The Girls writer and actress donned Sia's blonde bob wig and danced as she sang the song face down in a pillow on top of bunk beds. During the dance Dunham smashes into objects around the mocked up bedroom, throws toilet paper around before climbing into the bed with Sia as the performance ends.

The Late Night performance is based on the official 'Chandelier' video, which features 11 year old dancer Maddie Ziegler.

Sia recently claimed that she could have given 'Chandelier' to Beyonce or Rihanna but chose to keep it for herself. The former Zero 7 singer has enjoyed huge success in recent years as a songwriter for hire, penning hits for Beyoncé and Rihanna as well as Katy Perry, Britney Spears and Eminem. Most recently she contributed a number of songs to Kylie Minogue's new album 'Kiss Me Once.'

However, 'Chandelier' is the first track to be heard from Sia's forthcoming solo album '1000 Forms Of Fear', her first since 'We Are Born' in 2010.

Morrissey wishes England squad good luck ahead of World Cup

June 9, 2014 17:20

The former Smiths singer was staying in same hotel as team in Miami and spoke to Leighton Baines

Morrissey has wished the England team good luck at the World Cup finals in Brazil after bumping into the players in a Miami hotel last week.

England player Leighton Baines revealed the conversation he had with the singer after introducing himself in a hotel the squad were staying in while preparing for this year's tournament. The defender admitted that he was one of the few players who actually recognised Morrissey and approached him to say hello.

"I had a chat with him. I was a bit nervous about going to speak to him to be honest. I wasn't sure how it would be received," Baines told The Mirror. "I was one of the few in the squad who actually knew who he was, which was disappointing enough. I was the only one who went over."

Admitting that besides himself only coach Gary Neville knew who Morrissey was, Baines continued: "I knew he'd played the night before and that he had a couple of gigs coming up, so I mentioned those and he wished us good luck." England's World Cup campaign kicks off on Saturday (June 14) when they face Italy.

Meanwhile, Morrissey was recently forced to cancel a gig in Atlanta, Georgia through ill health as well as postpone a show at the Revel Casino Hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Channing Tatum says Gambit role will 'change the superhero movie'

June 9, 2014

Actor says X-Men character is "not your typical hero"

Channing Tatum has said that his rumoured role as X-Men character Gambit is likely to begin with a stand-alone title that he hopes will "change the superhero movie.

As previously reported, X-Men: Days of Future Past producer Lauren Shuler Donner strongly suggested that Tatum will appear in the role for future movies, saying "He's a rogue, he's a rascal, just like Remy LeBeau."

Speaking to MTV, Tatum elaborated on her comments, saying: "We've talked about it being a standalone, first and actually trying to change the 'hero, superhero movie.' Because Gambit is not your typical hero."

"He's a thief," he continues. "He walks on the grey. I’m hoping we can change it a little bit, and then ultimately feather into the other ones."

However, Tatum still did not confirm that he has signed on to star in any films, adding: "Obviously, there’s nothing written… there’s only conversations and dreams, really, right now."

As reported, the rapper will play two nights at the iconic venue on July 11-12, with Odd Future already confirmed as one of the support acts.

Arctic Monkeys' Alex Turner says he's in 'no hurry' to write 'AM' follow-up

June 10, 2014 13:45

'There's lots of shit still to do on this album', he says

Alex Turner has revealed he's in "no hurry" to start writing the follow-up to Arctic Monkeys' 2013 album 'AM'.

Speaking after the band's two triumphant shows at London's Finsbury Park last month, Turner says in this week's NME, which is on newsstands from tomorrow (June 11) and available digitally, that he still has a "lot of shit still to do" with promoting and touring 'AM'.

"I've written a few things, but I'm not in a hurry," the frontman says. "We're going to keep going [with touring] until the summer and beyond that a little bit, maybe. I don't know. I wouldn't think it'll be too soon that we do the next one."

He then goes on to admit that part of the band's reluctance to rush back into the studio is their burgeoning success in the US. "It's been going really well in America and there's still lots of shit still to do on this album," he said. "I don't feel, for once, that we need to rush and get on to the next thing. It seems like a good place to leave it for a minute."

Arctic Monkeys will headline Reading and Leeds on August Bank Holiday weekend.

Blood Orange premiere 'You're Not Good Enough' video – watch

June 9, 2014 17:01

The track features on Dev Hynes' 2013 album 'Cupid Deluxe'

Blood Orange have premiered the video for 'You're Not Good Enough', from the 2013 album 'Cupid Deluxe'.

The dance-based video, which you can watch above, was directed by Gia Coppola, granddaughter of Francis Ford Coppola. Dev Hynes of Blood Orange recently soundtracked 30 minutes of her new film Palo Alto, starring James Franco and based on a collection of the actor's own short stories. The film features the track 'April's Bathroom Bummer', which you can listen to below.

Speaking about the video for 'You're Not Good Enough', Coppola commented: "I was very excited by the prospect of getting to do a music video for Dev. I'm obviously a huge fan of his, and we've been talking about trying to make a video together for a while now. Dev has great taste. I love discussing what interests us and bringing our ideas together. I've always been fascinated with choreography and live television, both of which felt perfect for 'You're Not Good Enough'."

Meanwhile, Hynes has said that he was a victim of racial profiling at Berlin airport, after he was held up by officers last month. The musician and producer tweeted that officers went through his electronic equipment asking for receipts of items he had purchased some time previously, and that his experience was "nothing new".

"Was just held in Berlin Airport even though I'm a valid EU citizen with a US visa," he wrote. "Everywhere I've ever been I am reminded that there are people out there holding a prejudice because of my skin colour, yes it was racial." He added: "They went through all of my electronics and wouldn't let me go because I didn't have receipts for things I bought a year ago."

Dev Hynes, formerly Lightspeed Champion, released 'Cupid Deluxe', his second album under the name Blood Orange, in November last year. The next single from the album, 'It Is What It Is', will be released on July 7.

The xx working on 'completely different' third album in Texas and Iceland

June 10, 2014 9:48

Producer Rodaidh McDonald discusses follow up to 'Coexist' while also offering Jai Paul update

The xx are working on their third album between Texas and Iceland with the release said to have a "completely different concept" to the band's first two records.

Producer Rodaidh McDonald, who has worked with the band before as well as with Bobby Womack, Adele, King Krule, Sampha and Vampire Weekend as manager of XL Records in-house studio, spoke to Dazed about his recent time spent with the band as they work on a follow up to 2012 album 'Coexist.'

"It's a completely different concept, says McDonald. "just trying everything, trying to find new ways of working, new sounds."

He continues: "We're doing it in Texas and Iceland, and maybe France. So that's kind of starting in the middle of July, I’ve already spent a bit of time with them in Texas. There are songs which have come out of our experiences in New York and Texas that would never have come out in London; the colours and the ideas and the moods on some of these songs are just not things you would write in London. It's about opening things up a bit more. They are a London band, but they're also a band that’s spent a lot of time in different countries. So we’re trying to push that further with the Iceland trip, which is happening in July."

McDonald also touches briefly on the enigmatic artist Jai Paul, with whom he has recently worked. Confirming that Paul is still working on his debut album, the producer says: "I did something with him last week, some vocal production on a new song. We finished it, whether he wants to put it out or not I don’t know. It’s just a very long process for him I guess, he’s been working on (his album) for years. One of the things that I sort of identified was that he might benefit from some help using vocals. But his music sounds so good, he doesn’t need any help, I think he’s perfect."

Jamie xx previously spoke about recording a new album in Texas. During the musician and producer's BBC 6 Music 6 Mix residency on May 2, he played a song by Texan country musician Mickey Newbury and explained to listeners that his band were recently in the singer's home state, working on new music.

More information about the third album from The xx can be found on the Instagram page of the band's record label Young Turks, who last month posted pictures from Marfa, Texas, with the caption "LP3 Recording" as well footage of Oliver Sim of the band recording handclaps for the record. On Facebook the band said they were working at the Marfa Recording Company studio.

Iggy Azalea on equalling The Beatles chart record: 'I'd rather be The Rolling Stones'

June 10, 2014 12:44

Rapper recently scored both the Number One and Number Two spots in the Billboard Hot 100

Iggy Azalea has responded to those who criticise her authenticity while also dismissing the way she recently matched a US chart record previously held by The Beatles.

The Australian artist has received repeated criticism of her Americanised rap voice in reviews but says that she does not feel the need to pay notice to her roots when making music.

"We get so caught up, especially in rap, with what's authentic, and I wish people would think more about what the fuck that even means," she told Billboard. "One critic was like, 'Why didn't you talk about more Australian things?' I don't understand why I'm supposed to write a song about living in the outback and riding a kangaroo to be authentic."

Elsewhere in the interview, Azalea says that the fact she recently matched The Beatles US chart record, scoring both the Number One and Number Two spots in the Billboard Hot 100, "doesn't mean anything". Distancing herself from the record, she said: "I'd rather be The Rolling Stones."

Iggy Azalea made news last week when she criticised Lorde's appearace at Nirvana's Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction, arguing that her appearance wasn't appropriate as she was not a peer of Kurt Cobain.

Parklife assault victim was protecting girlfriend from being hit with inflatable toy

June 10, 2014 12:05

A man is fighting for his life after being knocked unconscious at the Manchester bash

A man who is critically ill in hospital after being assaulting at Parklife Weekender in Manchester on Saturday (June 7) was protecting his girlfriend from being hit repeatedly with an inflatable toy.

As Manchester Evening News reports, a 26-year-old man was knocked unconscious in front of the Main Stage of the festival while watching Snoop Dogg at around 9:15pm.

Off-duty paramedics who were in the audience gave the man heart massage at the scene before stewards moved him to a 20-bed medical facility on site. However, he deteriorated and was rushed to North Manchester General Hospital. He has now been moved to Hope Hospital where he remains in a critical condition as doctors treat a bleed to his brain.

Greater Manchester Police say the man they believe is responsible for the attack is approximately 25 years old, 6ft tall, with short, curly, black hair shaved at the sides.

A spokesperson for the Parklife festival told NME yesterday: "We pride ourselves on a history of Parklife Weekender without any incidents. We regret that an isolated incident has taken place at this year's event, however medics were on the scene within minutes of it taking place.

"We will update as soon as we can and we are in constant contact with the medical services and police to help as much as possible. We urge festival goers to help the police identify the individual involved in the incident and contact them if they have any information at all."

In a separate incident, two men were stabbed at the same festival, also on Saturday (June 7). Reports suggest the men were wounded 'during a brawl' at the festival in the city's Heaton Park. One of the men was taken to Manchester Royal Infirmary with serious but non-life threatening injuries whilst the other was treated on site. Two men were arrested after police were called to the site at around 7.30pm.

The first day of Parklife Weekender (June 7) saw performances from Snoop Dogg, A$AP Rocky and Rudimental while Sunday (June 8) brought a headline set from Foals as well as performances from Jamie xx, Warpaint and Disclosure.

Bobby Womack released his last album, 'The Bravest Man In The Universe', in 2012, on which he worked with XL label boss Richard Russell and Damon Albarn. Despite struggling with cancer and Alzheimer's since its release, he has continued to write, record and tour, including playing a slot at Glastonbury last summer and UK shows earlier this year.

Speaking out about his plans for his new record, which will be his 28th studio album, Womack previously said: "I told Damon and Richard that whenever they're available to record I will make myself available but I was already working on a new album. I have Stevie Wonder on it, I have Rod Stewart, Levert, Snoop Dogg is on it...".

He continued: "I have a lot of songs where you hear Stevie Wonder singing the song and you hear me on the same song, so you really get the style, because I think that’s important. You don't get that style anymore. Like Sam Cooke and Ray Charles."

Jay Z and Beyoncé tease joint tour with star-studded movie trailer - watch

May 18, 2014 14:01

The married pair head out on the road together this summer in North America

Jay Z and Beyoncé have trailed their joint tour with a fake movie trailer, which you can watch above.

The three and a half minute long promo for a fictional film entitled Run sees guest appearances from actors Sean Penn, Don Cheadle, Jake Gyllenhaal, Blake Lively, Rashida Jones, Emmy Rossum and more, with Jay Z and Beyoncé appearing as a Bonnie and Clyde style criminal couple. At the end of the trailer, the caption 'Coming Never' appears on screen. The trailer was directed by music video director Melina Matsoukas.

The trailer is to promote the pair's joint 'On The Run' tour, set to take place in the US this summer. The married couple regularly appear during each other's live shows, with Jay Z performing with Beyoncé in London earlier this year when the Mrs Carter Tour arrived at the O2 Arena in February.

The tour will take in 16 dates through June, July and August and starts in Miami at the Sun Life Stadium on June 25. The tour will then continue through the USA and Canada, stopping at Beyoncé's home town of Houston, Texas on July 18. The final date on the tour will come on August 6 at San Francisco's AT&T Park.

Jay Z, Beyoncé and Solange have released a statement after footage was posted online which appeared to show Solange attacking her sister's rapper husband in a lift. A statement given to Associated Press, issued on behalf of all of them, said "Jay and Solange each assume their share of responsibility for what has occurred". They describe it as an "unfortunate incident".

It adds: "But the most important thing is that our family has worked through it. They both acknowledge their role in this private matter that has played out in the public. They both have apologised to each other and we have moved forward as a united family. At the end of the day families have problems and we’re no different. We love each other and above all we are family. We’ve put this behind us and hope everyone else will do the same," it concludes.

The altercation, between Solange and her brother-in-law Jay Z, took place at the Standard Hotel in New York at an after-party for the annual Met Gala on May 5.

Writing in a statement posted on fan forum True To You, Morrissey denied that he posted his first official tweet earlier this week, saying:

I would like to stress that I do not have either a Twitter or a Facebook account. I gather that a Twitter account has been opened in my name - as 'It's Morrissey' - but it is NOT Morrissey. On May 14 a tweet was sent out by the verified Morrissey account @itsmorrissey on Twitter, reading: "Hello. Testing, 1, 2, 3. Planet Earth, are you there? One can only hope...". Four more tweets have since been posted, with tour details and a tweet which read: "Twitter is the perfect metaphor for...something. Dunno what."

Morrissey recently revealed the title track from his new album 'World Peace Is None of Your Business'. The song is the first to be taken from Morrissey's forthcoming solo album of the same name and is available to download immediately for those who pre-order the record.

Joss Stone murder plotters appeal sentences

May 17, 2014 13:32

Junior Bradshaw and Kevin Liverpool were jailed last year for the crime

The two men found guilty of plotting to kill singer Joss Stone are appealing their sentences.

Last year Junior Bradshaw and Kevin Liverpool were both found guilty of planning to kill, injure and rob the singer at her Devon home in 2011, after being found by police in possession of weapons including a samurai sword. Bradshaw was jailed for 18 years and Liverpool was jailed for life, alongside the recommendation of a minimum term of 10 years and eight months.

BBC News reports that the men have appealed their sentences, with both appearing at the hearing. London's Court of Appeal are set to announce their decision on May 20.

Joss Stone previously said that she "felt sorry" for the two men. "There was a big part of me that felt sorry for them, sorry for their mums. I kept thinking, ‘What drives people to do something so awful as this?’ I thought about their mums, how they must feel. Someone comes to their door and says, 'Your child has tried to murder someone'," said Stone. "I did actually want to ask them why. Was it because I sang a song they hated?"

Foo Fighters play surprise New Orleans show

May 18, 2014 17:25

Arcade Fire's Win Butler and Régine Chassagne checked out the Preservation Hall courtyard gig

Foo Fighters played a surprise show in New Orleans last night (May 17).

Arcade Fire's Win Butler and Régine Chassagne checked out the Preservation Hall courtyard gig and also joined the venue's legendary Preservation Hall Jazz Band onstage for a rendition of traditional New Orleans song 'Iko Iko', as the jazz band opened up for Dave Grohl's group. The Preservation Hall Jazz Band later joined Foo Fighters onstage with musician Trombone Shorty for a brass-assisted rendition of 'This Is A Call', reports Consequence of Sound.

Grohl discussed the recording process for the Foo Fighters' new album with the crowd during the 90 minute long gig, which shut down a whole block of the city. "We've been to a lot of great places, we've jammed with a lot of great people," said Grohl. "But this week in this city has changed our band forever." The band had been recording with producer Butch Vig in the venue prior to the show.

Foo Fighters will release their new album this autumn. The record will feature a host of special guests from eight cities in the US and an eight-part TV series for HBO will document its making.

Each of the eight episodes of the HBO show will see the band travel to a different US city to write and record songs for the album: Chicago, Austin, Nashville, Los Angeles, Seattle, New Orleans, Washington, DC and New York. In each location, they have visited - or will visit - a renowned studio to record a track for the album, that Grohl describes as "a love letter to the history of American music". Each song is to feature local musical figures, and every lyric will be written on the very last day of each session. Guests include Chicago bluesman Buddy Guy.

Earlier this month, the band played a career-spanning set at Washington DC's 9.30 Club. Last month they shared pictures of the recording sessions for their new album.

Michael Jackson hologram to appear at Billboard Music Awards

May 18, 2014 13:23

The hologram will perform 'Slave to the Rhythm' from posthumous album 'Xscape'

A Michael Jackson hologram is set to appear at the Billboard Music Awards tonight (May 18).

The performance was supposed to be a secret, but a ruling by a federal judge which rejected a lawsuit from hologram companies Hologram USA Inc and Musion Das Hologram Ltd - who made the Tupac hologram at 2012's Coachella Festival and hoped to stop the performance - made the news of the event public, reports LA Times.

The hologram will perform 'Slave to the Rhythm' from the late singer's current posthumous album 'Xscape'. The hologram companies wanted to the halt the performance after alleging that a competitor was using their technology without their permission. Judge Kent Dawson said there was insufficient evidence to prove that Hologram USA Inc and Musion Das Hologram Ltd's patents were being used for the Jackson hologram. The Billboard Awards take place tonight at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Jackson's posthumous release 'Xscape' was released on Monday (May 12) and looks set to go straight to Number One in the UK tonight. The album includes eight unreleased songs worked on by contemporary artists and producers, including Timbaland and Stargate. The album is the project of executive producer LA Reid, who was granted unlimited access to four decades' worth of Jackson's vocal material.

BLOG: Michael Jackson's 'Xscape' album: Why it adds nothing to a legend's legacy

Jackson's closest competition in the Official UK Album Charts this week comes from The Black Keys. Speaking about the release of a new album from the King Of Pop, Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney said: "[It's] some fucking bullshit that sucks so bad that it took them three years after he died to make it listenable."

Monty Python's Terry Gilliam says troupe's reunion is 'depressing'

May 17, 2014

He adds that the comedy group have 'become the Establishment we took the piss out of'

Monty Python's Terry Gilliam has said that he find's the troupe's reunion 'depressing'.

The comedy group will play a series of reunion shows at London's O2 Arena this July. Although they were originally scheduled to play only one show, they added an extra four dates after tickets for the first performance sold out in 43.5 seconds. The show will contain new material as well as some "greatest hits" and material they've never performed live onstage before, plus animation from Terry Gilliam. The troupe last performed live at the Hollywood Bowl in July, 1980. They last performed in London at Drury Lane Theatre in 1974.

Now, in an interview with the Evening Standard, Gilliam has said that they have "sold out" by getting back together again. "The truth is I find it depressing that we’re getting back together again," he commented. "It’s like, we worked so hard to get careers beyond it, to get to this stage, and now we’re being dragged back again."

Saying "in the end we sold out", he also explained that it was harder for the group to do comedy anymore because "we’ve become the Establishment we took the piss out of".

Meanwhile, the album 'Monty Python Sings (Again)' will be released on June 9 and feature five new tracks alongside some of Monty Python's best known comedy songs. The album was first released in 1989 and features tracks from the group's films and TV work, including 'Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life' and 'Knights of the Round Table (Camelot Song)'.
