The 'Blurred Lines' singer has been called a 'worthy winner' of the End Violence Against Women Coalition poll
Robin Thicke has been named 'Sexist of the Year' by a coalition of women's groups.The 'Blurred Lines' artist came top of the poll conducted by the End Violence Against Women Coalition, which is made up of more than 60 women's rights groups, reports The Guardian. Sarah Green of the group said of their poll winner: "Our heartfelt congratulations to a worthy winner Robin Thicke for both his concerted sexist efforts, and in the end the platform he created for rejection of the use of women as objects to promote mediocre pop... Sexism might be de rigeur for some music industry 'creatives' but the times they are a-changin'."
The coalition said they would be awarding Thicke with a voucher so he could download Aretha Franklin's song 'Respect'. As well as drawing attention to his controversial 'Blurred Lines' video, and its contentious lyrics, they highlighted a number of quotes made by the singer, including a comment made to GQ magazine, in which he said: "People say, 'Hey, do you think this is degrading to women?' I'm like, 'Of course it is. What a pleasure it is to degrade a woman. I've never gotten to do that before'."
Robin Thicke's 'Blurred Lines' has been named the biggest-selling single of 2013. The singer's summer hit has sold well over 1million copies in the UK, reports the Official UK Charts Company, beating Daft Punk's 'Get Lucky' to the crown. 'Blurred Lines', which has sold 1.44million copies, has the edge by a few thousand over 'Get Lucky', which has sales of 1.28million. In third place is Avicii's 'Wake Me Up, Passenger's 'Let Me Go' is at Number Four and Naughty Boy, featuring up-and-coming star Sam Smith, is at Number Five with 'La La La'.
