Reports say actor could sign up for Batman vs Superman film

Joaquin Phoenix has been linked with the lead villain role in the forthcoming Man Of Steel sequel, according to reports.

Variety says that Phoenix, who has starred in films including Gladiator, Walk The Line and The Master, is being targeted by director Zack Snyder to appear in the Batman vs Superman superhero mash-up. The reports claim that although no offer has been made as of yet, Snyder wants Phoenix to play Superman's arch-nemesis Lex Luthor in the film.

Meanwhile, as Digital Spy states, Argo writer Chris Terrio has been hired to rework the script for Man Of Steel 2. Academy Award-winning Terrio, who worked with Ben Affleck on Argo, has been asked to rewrite David S Goyer's script.

Snyder will start shooting the Man Of Steel sequel in Michigan early next year (2014). Affleck is set to take on the role of Batman, while Henry Cavill will reprise his role as Superman and Amy Adams returning to play Lois Lane. Fast & Furious actress Gal Gadot has been cast as Wonder Woman, while Man Of Steel stars Diane Lane and Laurence Fishburne will also return once more. Warner Bros has given the film - whose official title has yet to be confirmed - a release date of July 17, 2015.
