The hologram will perform 'Slave to the Rhythm' from posthumous album 'Xscape'

A Michael Jackson hologram is set to appear at the Billboard Music Awards tonight (May 18).

The performance was supposed to be a secret, but a ruling by a federal judge which rejected a lawsuit from hologram companies Hologram USA Inc and Musion Das Hologram Ltd - who made the Tupac hologram at 2012's Coachella Festival and hoped to stop the performance - made the news of the event public, reports LA Times.

The hologram will perform 'Slave to the Rhythm' from the late singer's current posthumous album 'Xscape'. The hologram companies wanted to the halt the performance after alleging that a competitor was using their technology without their permission. Judge Kent Dawson said there was insufficient evidence to prove that Hologram USA Inc and Musion Das Hologram Ltd's patents were being used for the Jackson hologram. The Billboard Awards take place tonight at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Jackson's posthumous release 'Xscape' was released on Monday (May 12) and looks set to go straight to Number One in the UK tonight. The album includes eight unreleased songs worked on by contemporary artists and producers, including Timbaland and Stargate. The album is the project of executive producer LA Reid, who was granted unlimited access to four decades' worth of Jackson's vocal material.

Jackson's closest competition in the Official UK Album Charts this week comes from The Black Keys. Speaking about the release of a new album from the King Of Pop, Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney said: "[It's] some fucking bullshit that sucks so bad that it took them three years after he died to make it listenable."

Best New Band winners perform song from their debut album at O2 Academy Brixton

Drenge performed their single 'Bloodsports' at the NME Awards with Austin, Texas on Wednesday night (February 26). Scroll up to watch now.

The two-piece, brothers Eoin and Rory Loveless, were named Best New Band supported by Mossimo at the awards ceremony. They beat off competition from Swim Deep, Chvrches and Jagwar Ma, among others.

Other big winners at this week's ceremony included Blondie, Damon Albarn and Lily Allen. Performances came from The Horrors and Drenge plus Metronomy, who opened the show by performing 'Love Letters', from their forthcoming album of the same name, with MKS. Belle & Sebastian played 'I Want The World To Stop' and 'The Boy With The Arab Strap'.

Arctic Monkeys dominated the NME Awards 2014 with Austin, Texas, however, picking up five awards including Best British Band, Best Live Band and Best Album for 'AM'.

Daft Punk to perform at Grammy Awards 2014

Organiser promises "a collaborative and celebratory stage performance" from French duo

Daft Punk will perform at the Grammy Awards next year.

The French duo will perform material from their album 'Random Access Memories' live for the first time at the January 26 ceremony, which takes place at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles. Daft Punk are nominated for five awards on the night, including the highly coveted Record Of The Year.

Speaking about what will be Daft Punk's first televised performance since 2008, Grammys Executive Producer Ken Ehrlich tells Rolling Stone that fans can expect "a collaborative and celebratory stage performance that honors their multi-nominated music." Daft Punk's last TV performance came at the Grammys in 2008, when they played alongside Kanye West on his song 'Stronger'.

"We learned that because they had such a good experience with us when they appeared with Kanye in 2008, they were happy to discuss a performance on this year's show," Ehrlich adds. "Conversations took place over a period of a couple of months, and finally they agreed to be a part of this year's telecast."

Lorde, James Blake, Tame Impala, Disclosure and The National are amongst the artists to receive nominations for the 56th annual Grammy Awards. Click hereto see the full list of nominees.

Lana Del Rey victim of Academy Awards smear campaign?

A fake article saying her 'Great Gatsby' song had been disqualified from the Oscars Best Original Song category was circulated

Lana Del Rey has reportedly found herself the victim of Academy Awards smear campaign.

The singer has been nominated in the Best Original Song category for 'Young and Beautiful', which featured on the soundtrack to Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby. However, it has been reported that an anonymous party has been sending out fake letters to members of the Academy Awards voting board, incorrectly stating that the song is ineligible for the prize, writes Deadline.

Deadline says that a printout of an online article, with the Variety title attached to it, was sent out, stating that the song was disqualified from the category because of the film's changed release date. Warner Brothers subsequently checked the piece and found it had never been published on the Variety site.

In addition to Del Rey, M83, Jay-Z and The xx have all gained spots on the longlist for Best Original Song at next year's Academy Awards. The round-up of 75 songs celebrates the the top music written for films this year. The Great Gatsby has the most nominated tracks, with five songs from the Baz Luhrmann film on the list. The xx's 'Together' made the cut, as did Jay-Z's '100$ Bill', along with Florence And The Machine's 'Over The Love'.

Elsewhere, Karen O made it on to the list for the second year in a row for 'The Moon Song' from Her, M83 bagged a spot for their work on Oblivion and Pharrell Williams had success with Despicable Me 2's 'Happy'. The tracks will be whittled down to a shortlist, announced on January 16 2014, before the 86th annual awards ceremony on March 2 in Los Angeles.

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - British boy band One Direction has swept the inaugural awards recognizing the most popular people in social media globally, coming top in four out of 10 categories at a star-studded ceremony in Singapore.

One Direction was named most popular music group, most popular UK musicians, most popular in the UK, and most popular in west Europe, at the Social Star Awards, but did not show up to collect their prizes, sending their thanks by videolink.

Canadian pop star Justin Bieber won the award for best solo artist, Selena Gomez for most popular actor, Ellen DeGeneres for top TV show, and Portuguese soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo for most popular sports star.

The awards highlight viral sensations and people who garner the most social media attention globally based on data from Singapore-based Starcount that tracks the social media activity of 1.7 billion people across 11 social media networks.

American actress Jessica Alba and "Entourage" star Jeremy Piven hosted Thursday night's ceremony that ended a 24-hour marathon of 288 online awards awarded in categories ranging from best finance brand to top Indonesia actor.

"It is all about the most popular people on the planet ... Everyday we are sharing, liking, viewing, tweeting and what our awards show does is celebrate the superstars of social media," Starcount CEO Paul Morrison told reporters ahead of the awards.

Many of the award winners were absent from the prize giving but the void was filled with live performances by South Korean rapper Psy, American singer Carly Rae Jepsen, SkyBlu from electronic dance duo LMFAO, and U.S. rockers Aerosmith.

R&B singer-songwriter Eric Benet hailed the impact of social media.

"If you plan on being relevant and have a sustainable career in this day and age social media is about as important as TV was ... in the 1950s," he told Reuters television.

"Way back in the '90s when I started back in the music industry we would have to rely on our PR department and our record label but now in this day and age we, the artist, can take command of our career. It's awesome."

Madonna to be honored for top grossing tour at Billboard Awards

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Madonna will be honored at the Billboard Music Awards show this month for her 2012 MDNA tour, the high grossing concert tour of the year, organizers of the awards show said on Wednesday.

The singer will accept the Top Touring Artist award at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on May 19th for the tour that grossed more than $305 million from 88 sold-out shows and attracted an audience of 2.2 million people.

"A cultural icon, Madonna is one of the most successful and influential entertainers of all time and was recently named Billboard's Top Money Maker of 2012," Billboard said in a statement.

The chart-topping singer holds numerous other Billboard awards, including the record for the most top 10 singles (38).

In addition to her music, Madonna is also an avid art collector. On Tuesday she sold a 1921 painting by the French artist Fernand Leger, "Trois Femmes a la Table Rouge," for $7.16 million to raise money for the non-profit Ray of Light Foundation, to fund girls' education in poor countries.

The mother of four, including two adopted children from Malawi, is planning to build 10 schools in the African nation.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - British boy band One Direction were the big winners at the MTV Video Music Awards on Thursday, edging out Rihanna and taking home three prizes to crown their arrival on the U.S. pop scene just six months ago.

The five baby-faced guys, contestants on the British version of TV singing contest "The X Factor," beat Justin Bieber and Rihanna for best pop video, and fellow all-boy British outfit The Wanted as best new artists.

They also won the most-shareworthy video award - which was voted on by fans - for their debut hit single "What Makes You Beautiful" and later performed their latest release "One Thing" to hordes of screaming girls at the two-hour Los Angeles ceremony.

"To win one Moonman is amazing, to win two is incredible," said Harry Styles, as the band collected the silver VMA trophy for best new artists.

"Thank you so much! We have grown up watching this show and to collect one of these straight away is incredible," said a jubilant Niall Horan.

One Direction, which is managed by British TV entrepreneur Simon Cowell, made history in March when it became the first UK group to see its first album, "Up All Night," debut at the top of the Billboard 200 chart.

Rihanna, who went into the VMA's sharing a leading five nominations with Canadian rapper Drake, came away with just one award.

But it was the most coveted award of the night - video of the year - and the Barbados-born superstar won it for her dizzying visual romp in hit single "We Found Love."

"I love you guys! This is awesome," Rihanna told her fans as she collected the Moonman trophy and showed off a new pixie hair cut.

In a hip-hop-heavy show, rapper Nicki Minaj won best female video for "Starships," while Chris Brown won two awards - best male video and best choreography for "Turn Up the Music."

Drake also came away with just one win, for his hip-hop video "HYFR," which celebrates his Jewish heritage. "I want to dedicate this award to any kid who has had a long walk home," Drake said.

The VMA's have become known as one of the more unpredictable and controversial award shows, but Thursday's ceremony had none of the jaw-dropping moments - like the steamy 2003 Madonna/Britney Spears kiss - that have marked previous years.

This year, U.S. Olympic gymnastics champion Gabby Ross, 16, back-flipped and leapt across the stage while Alicia Keys sang her new single "Girl On Fire." Ross and her four fellow team-mates also introduced Keys.

Punk rocker Billie Joe Armstrong seemed fully recovered from a weekend dehydration episode that forced Green Day to cancel a performance in Italy, and he was mobbed on Thursday while singing after inviting fans to come up on stage.

Lil Wayne gave the first televised performance of his new single "No Worries," and Frank Ocean, who made headlines in July by coming out as a rare gay hip-hop artist, performed an emotional version of "Thinkin Bout You."

Calvin Harris was the winner of the VMA's first award in the increasingly popular electronic dance music category for "Feel So Close."

Country-pop crossover singer Taylor Swift closed the show with her best-selling single "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" and other performers included Pink, Minaj, and Rihanna.

Patent Pending's Joe Ragosta Reflects on His Billboard Music Awards Adventure

My name is Joe Ragosta and I sing in the band Patent Pending. (That's me in the center of the above photo.) To give you a little bit of a back story on who we are, Patent Pending is a pop-punk/rock band that's been around for 11 years. We're a rag-tag group of kids from Long Island, NY that have been touring in the same dingy, smelly, air-condition-less van for the past 9 years. Scratching and crawling our way through the musical trenches in venues ranging in size from basements in New Jersey to Warped Tour amphitheaters across the country.

With gritty, grass-roots promotion and a whatever-it-takes attitude, we've been able to carve a (very) small pocket for ourselves in the gigantic ever-spinning wheel that is the music industry. A few months ago, Billboard called and asked us to be part of The Billboard & Chevrolet Battle of The Bands that we eventually went on to win. Being in a small band, it's easy to have the attitude of "pop music sucks." It's easy to say that what Justin Bieber sings about, what Katy Perry is wearing  or what LMFAO is saying is of no concern to the music that we are making. To me, this couldn't be further from the truth. These are the taste-makers. These are the people who, like it or not, are pretty much the soundtrack to the lives of anyone who leaves their home for any length of time because you can't walk down a city street without seeing their faces or hearing their songs. To be included in a night like this with people like that was something I couldn't possibly begin to accurately describe without sounding like a 13 year-old fan girl. SO FAN GIRL I SHALL BE!  Here are some of my personal highlights from the 2012 Billboard Music Awards.

Patent Pending Wins the Billboard Battle of the Bands

First of all, we were assigned "talent escorts." Their job is to stay with us all day to make sure we have anything that we may need and to make sure that we get where we are going on time all day long! This may not sound like much, but it's pretty much a human alarm clock with water bottle holding capabilities! They were so kind and organized, I honestly can't get over how fantastic it was to have them on our team for the day. We arrived at the MGM Grand Arena for a closed dress rehearsal soundcheck early in the day. Just the site of the arena from the state of the art stage was enough to make our heads spin. We're used to playing in small dark clubs in scrappy towns, so this was obviously quite a change of scenery for us. When we got there, CeeLo Green was finishing his soundcheck… I think it goes without saying, CeeLo + Goodie Mob + Pyro = Bonkers! I counted over 35 stage hands helping us load our 15 pieces of gear onto the stage. Their efficiency was only outdone by their kindness.

After we were done checking, many men with headsets swooped in like ninjas to break down our gear. Within seconds, our equipment disappeared like it was part of a Chrss Angel show (sans the douche-y commentary!). As we turned to walk off the stage we heard the dudes talking into their headphones saying "Set for Kelly Clarkson!"… "Ms. Clarkson is almost to the entrance ramp, please set staging to mark." I know that this sounds like just words muttered into a headset, but WE ARE TALKING ABOUT KELLY FREAKIN' CLARKSON HERE! She's a legend that has more top 10 hit songs than we have albums. We were sharing a stage with her, icon Stevie Wonder, Usher, Katy Perry, Carrie Underwood and not to mention the entire thing was being hosted by Ty Burrel and Julie Bowen of (one of my favorite shows) "Modern Family"! It was right about then that we started to realize the gravity of the situation that we were in and the magnitude of the opportunity that we had been blessed with.

Just then I walked down the ramp and found myself singing out loud "Jason Deruuuuulllllooooo." I imagine this is a common reaction by anyone who runs into him, but I do remember putting my hand to my mouth immediately in an effort to hide what i had just said out loud! I remember having to tell myself "Dude, you're going to see a lot of famous people who have no idea who you are today and if you say things out loud, they are going to hear them… so SHUT UP!" It seemed like he didn't notice, which I'm guessing is a good thing.

We were then whisked away to wardrobe. They were super cool about letting us dress in our own style and letting us be ourselves. Minus a tie or two for the red carpet, we all just wore things that we already owned. I think that was one of the most relieving parts for us. It was important to us throughout the whole process that we didn't sell ourselves out and do something or wear something that we wouldn't do on our own already and the powers that be were incredibly accommodating to that.

While we were at wardrobe we actually got the chance to meet Kelly Clarkson! She talked to Anthony about how much she loves his hair. You could see him melting inside. I think he's always had a thing for her. I'm only saying that because of the Kelly Clarkson poster that hangs behind his TV in his room back home. He handled himself like a real pro! He was even able to form two complete sentences which actually turned into a full conversation. Like most people we met this weekend, Kelly's talent is only outshined by her kindness. We met Carly Rae Jepsen's band. Those dudes were rad and I was stoked to find out later in the day that not only do they play every note when they perform, but they also play them perfectly!

Adele's label XL is big winner at Music Week Awards

LONDON (Reuters) - Record label XL was the big winner at the Music Week Awards late on Thursday, picking up four prizes mainly for its work on Adele's chart-topping "21".

At a ceremony in central London, music business publication Music Week honored XL Recordings with the A & R Award, the artist marketing campaign prize for 21 and the best record company award.

Richard Russell, XL Recordings boss, also picked up the outstanding contribution prize, while Adele turned up to present her manager Jonathan Dickins with his manager of the year award.

XL, which is independent but dubbed a "mini-major" by the music trade after it's huge success with Adele and other acts, began in 1989 as a specialist rave label.

The big breakthrough came in 1997 with The Prodigy's hit album "The Fat of the Land", which reached number one in 26 countries including the United States.

The label branched out to other genres, signing artists like Dizzee Rascal, The White Stripes and, crucially, Adele.

The British singer's second album "21" has sold more than 20 million copies worldwide, earned her a raft of major music awards and turned her into one of the biggest names in pop.

Among the other winners on the night was BBC's Radio 6 program, which picked up the radio station and radio show awards, the latter going to DJ Steve Lamacq.

KISS, Motley Crue Take Aim at Rihanna, Awards Show Pop Stars

Two of hard rock's biggest acts aren't happy with the state of pop.

"We're sick and tired of girls getting up there with dancers and karaoke tapes in back of them," KISS' Gene Simmons said on Tuesday afternoon as KISS and Motley Crue announced their first joint tour in three decades. "The guys you see on stage are playing their instruments. No fake bullshit. Leave that to the Rihanna, Shmianna and anyone who ends their name with an 'A.'"

Backstage at the Roosevelt Hotel, Motley Crue's Tommy Lee expanded on his colleague's comments, criticizing the state of pop-heavy award shows.

"No disrespect to Rihanna, she's a great singer, but we're in a slump for some shit that has some personality and appeal beyond a bunch of pop stuff that's floating around out there," he told Billboard.com. "I'm glad he said that actually because I don't think i can bear watching another f***ing award show that is just a little bit better than 'American Idol.' It's f***ing pathetic to watch people go out and f***ing karaoke with a bunch of lights and video. It's all completely watered down."

KISS & Motley Crue Announce Summer Tour: 'No Fake Bulls---'

"He's right, anyone can buy a light show, anyone can buy pyro," KISS' Eric Singer added. "You can't keep reinserting a different he or she in there. you have to be able to get up there and play and sing."

Other members of the bands questioned the apparent dearth of guitar rock, on the road and elsewhere.

"It's a shame you don't have as many rock and roll bands, only the cream of the crop has survived," KISS' Tommy Thayer said. "It makes [the tour] more of a unique event. It's definitely the biggest rock show of the year."

While many musicians have found success online in recent years -- Rihanna, for instance, has 53 million Facebook likes -- KISS' Paul Stanley said the real fan interaction happens at the show.

"Isn't that what we're all about? We're only as good as the audiences. So fan interaction, that's really what rock and roll is," he said on Tuesday. "If you [just] want to listen to music, stay home and put it on the stereo."

Carrie and Brad to host CMA Awards a 4th time (AP)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley will be back together again in November.

They've been picked to host the Country Music Association Awards for a fourth straight year. The 45th annual awards will be aired live Nov. 9 from Nashville's Bridgestone Arena on ABC.

Paisley is the reigning CMA entertainer of the year. Paisley and Underwood have won 19 CMA awards between them.

As Paisley notes in a news release announcing their return, they've achieved a comic chemistry over the years with Underwood's class balancing "my non-class act. I'll try my best to not mess it up."

The CMA Awards are the most-watched country awards show. More than 16 million viewers tuned in last year.

NASHVILLE, Tenn (Reuters) – Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood will co-host the 45th annual Country Music Association Awards on November 9, sharing the duty for the fourth time, they said on Monday.

The two made the announcement via Facebook from the set of their new video, "Remind Me."

The CMA Awards, which annually are among the highest honors for country singers, will be handed out at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, and will be broadcast live by ABC.

"We wanted to take a minute to share some very exciting news," Underwood said in the announcement that was available on YouTube. "The CMA has asked Brad and me back to host the CMA Awards in November."

Paisley had also tweeted earlier that he and Underwood were shooting the video, and photos from both that tweet and the CMA announcement showed them on an undisclosed beach.

"Can you believe that?" asked Paisley, who won the CMA Entertainer of the Year award last year. "I can't wait to do it again."

CMA chief executive Steve Moore said both Underwood and Paisley "have the unique qualities of humor, talent, credibility and natural rapport that makes them a hit with fans and the industry audience."

The awards show honors country music's biggest stars from the previous year, with some of the genre's best-known singers handing out 12 awards including Entertainer of the Year, Male and Female Vocalist of the Year, and Album of the Year.

Other awards are Single and Song of the Year, Group of the Year, Vocal Duo, Musical Event, Musician of the Year, Music Video and New Artist of the Year.

Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga win at Canada video awards (Reuters)

Bieber, who was on hand as girlfriend Selena Gomez co-hosted the event, was voted favorite artist by his countrymen for the video "Somebody to Love."

Additionally "Somebody to Love" and his clip for "Find Your Love" shared the prize for best international Canadian video.

Lady Gaga was voted most popular international artist by fans, and also took home the best international video for "Judas." She performed twice at the show.

The video of the year went to Ontario pop/R&B singer Shawn Desman for "Electric/Night Like This," while Los Angeles-based hip-hop quartet Far East Movement grabbed the international group video trophy for "Like a G6."
